The Time to Step Forward

In the world of Sanctuary, all peoples and groups have their own way of moving from childhood to adulthood, but none so extreme and wholesome as the way of the farmers. The gods must be so pleased with the design of this ceremony because no famine has cursed the land for centuries. As a token of asuraty, on the 22-00 PG decennial Reception of the ArchPriests of Adjure, the thought of deep favor was received from the gods in reference to the agrarian cerimony of age.

In the lands of third continent the farmers of all fields who have sons and daughters that are blessed to live to the age past 11 winters, will engage in the cerimony known as The Time. The Time to Step Forward takes place after much preparation of the elders of the closest village who, along with many of the local elder women, will prepare a forest maze of felled trees. In the morning on the day of the cerimony, the children, who are participants of the cerimony who have seen eleven winters come and gone, will be blindefolded and led to the forest maze. Upon their arrival, the children are hoisted up upon the backs of great piggers or great elken, synched in place with ropes, and sent off into the woods to reach the end of the maze.

The first child to reach the end of the forest maze, while maintaining a balanced position upon their beast, will receive a special blessing from the eldest in the farming community. Aside from the winner, all who participate and reach the maze end do complete the first of three parts of their cerimony.

The second part of The Time cerimony is that each participant must farm a field within a limited time frame. Plowing, sowing, and harvesting. When it is possible, actual fields of harvest are provided, but if it is not, a field of built substitutions are usually provided. Those who are not able to complete the second part of the cerimony are not allowed to enter the third part, but are always allowed to participate in the next upcoming cerimony.

The third and final part of the coming of age cerimony is that each child must enter a room with a board of elders each and give answer to three secret questions. Most applicable answers will be accepted, but there have been some who have failed this final part. Those who do fail the third task will not be allowed to participate in another Cerimony for a decade. Some children have become truely grown because of this rule, and that is its intent.

After the cerimony is completed, all families will enjoy a great feast full of music, laughter and firelight tales, the core of the life of agrarian peoples. For what more could push man to continue to struggle with earth to bring forth food, but to feast on its fruits and share it with others.
