Kattan

(pl -u) A species of sebb that appear insectoid.   These sapient mantoids are thought to be mythical, although many use stories of them to scare younglings at night or into good behavior   The Kattanu differentiate themselves from the Bugul by means of ritual scarification, preferably through an Urdel: finding & having their carapace scarred by Chironex.   They then have scars highlighted with precious metals, gems, jewels...they initially did not value such as others (ie gold over silver over copper) but purely for aesthetics. Over time, trade with others taught them to value such things. This eventually altered their culture. The scarification signals adulthood. Status is indicated by types and amounts of precious metals and gems for traders, crafters, and other Guilders. Warriors and hunters prefer plain battle scars. It is thought that it is easy to fake scars if gilded over. This scarification is a method of "counting coup". Each scar represents a story of conflict with enemy or prey. Or both since the Kattanu didn't recognize other sebb as sapient at first. Some nests and colonies still don't.   Both the Kattanu and Bugul (not what they call themselves, by the way) identify themselves in terms of their city-state (or hive) and caste for the Bugul and by Gimah, year of hatching, and profession for the Kattanu.     The Bugul are born into a caste, each having specialized functions genetically designed into their bodies. Harvesters are physically different from warriors, atta herders, etc. This is as self-evident to them as the pheremonic communication, but not as much with other sapients who cannot easily differentiate between what they consider tiny differences in some instances.   Hatchery nurses deal with eggs, caste specialization based on hive needs (they add different chemicals to effect changes) Teachers train grubs about hive history, place in life, duties, etc. The base knowledge needed for all. ~|| thru tech school post-grad in terms of knowledge. All participate in apprenticeships with older caste members for practicum after molting.   Unlike the native Bugul which are sentient/pre-sapient as individuals and sapient as hives (perhaps only their Queens?), the Kattanu are individually sapient, uplifted by accidental Cloud exposure.   As a result of the individual sapience, they have greater capacity for language and communication with other sebb. This communication bears similarities with the known audio/somatic components of the Bugul Unity communications systems between "queens/hives". This is also a known pheromonic element that may or may not be detectable by other sophonts.   Because the Hive and Unity are foremost, "individually sapient Bugul" are aberrations. At best, they are "insane" because they desire to be separate/apart from the Collective. At worst, they are considered defective or diseased and need to be excised from the Unity like cancer. There are specialized soldier and nurse functionaries that perform the termination, not unlike white blood cells attacking foreign bacteria.   They produce a substance (thought to be poison) that crystallizes as it hardens, it is shaped and used for tools, weapons, etc. Forming one's first tool or weapon is a mark of full maturity since the exudate cannot be produced by immature beings.   The @gimakan[article] will lay clutches of 40-100 eggs at a time. Most don't survive. The adults don't much care. Eggs and grubs are not considered sapient...presapient at best. Defective eggs and grubs are ruthlessly culled until First Molting, at which point they can become functional members of their society.   They tend to prefer hot & humid climates in deep valleys where oxygen is somewhat more concentrated than at higher elevations and where a larger variety of food and other resources are readily available.   They are natural bio-gengineers. They will encourage large beetles to serve as draft animals; herds of Atta to manage foliage and tend to "honey" producing aphids. Several forms of bombardier beetles and similar creatures (that use formic acid as a projectile weapon) are incorporated into hive defenses alongside the warrior caste. They have been known to enslave pangolins and armadillos ("hard-shelled" mammals) as pack and draft animals as well.   How they accomplish this is completely unknown; it is their form of "magic". (See St Clarke)   The Kattanu revere GAI as their deity, since they believe it to have been instrumental in uplifting them into individual sapience.
