Lasipia

The bite of a mudviper can cause a disease known as Lasipia. Lasipia has historically been one of the more common causes of death amongst farmers in Astronasia. Recently a folk cure from Riverina has become accepted by the medical community and the disease's mortality has been drastically reduced.

Causes

The venom of a mudviper can be extremely painful, but is designed to kill the small vermin it feeds on and not to kill large animals. The danger of a mudviper's bite doesn't come from its venom but from the Lasipia bacteria living in its mouth. These bacteria life on the skin of the vermin that it eats, and slowly build up in its mouth. Both the mudviper and its prey are immune to Lasipia but are often fatal to humanoids.

Symptoms

The symptoms of Lasipia infection often begin 2-5 days following the bite. Initial manifestations may include a light fever and sweating. These symptoms then develop into shivering, convulsions, and joint pain. After 7 days of suffering the patient will wither away and die.

Treatment

Lasipia can be treated with the bark of the Vochari tree. This tree grows naturally in the swampy marshlands of Riverina were it has been used as a folks remedy for generations. Recently alchemists from Greta have managed to distil the essence of this bark into an elixir which goes down more easier than the hard bark. This elixir is extremely spicy and some patients have a hard time keeping it inside. Because of this the drink is served as cold as possible. Drinking it helps reduce the fever symptoms at the short term and prolonged usage eventually leads to a full recovery.

Sequela

Those cured from the infection can still suffer from respiratory complications. Their long sometimes fill with fluids and they have problems with breathing.
