Ethereal Tide

"Can’t you feel it? It flows through the earth like a melody. A song which burrows under your skin and nestles in your bones.   The power of the Mother Ethera runs through our very blood, child. We just have to learn to open our hearts to it.."
Maedaga Alyn of the Elvaran Otso Tribe
The Ethereal Tide is the theoretical name given to the form of divine magic drawn directly from the raw power of nature.   Believed to be a gift from the creator of the world, the Goddess Ethera, the Ethereal Tide is the supposed force behind and is apparently responsible for the arcane power possessed by mages and shamans who specialise in healing, elemental manipulation, Therianthropy and prophecy.

History

For thousands of years, the tide has been considered an exemplification of the Mother’s power by many Elvarans. A gift of pure magic given to the world, but which only those worthy could harness and wield in the goddess’s name.   Therefore, the lore surrounding the Tide is intrinsic to the teachings of the The Congregation of the Eternal Mother and to the Elvish Tribes of Eastern Elvara.   This theory is in no way endorsed by the Empire of Malvarron, where magic is viewed as intrinsically corrupt with origins beyond the Ebonveil.

Theory

According to magical experts of old, the Ethereal Tide is a river of arcane energy which flows from the earth into every individual, creature and mineral in Astaeria, influencing the very nature and development of the world.   Zeverrias Erragar, hypothesised that the source of the Tide resides somewhere beneath the surface of the continent, and much of his research before his disappearance in 1331 A.E. was focussed on finding the root of that magic.   Perhaps the most interesting theory in his work was the idea that the Tide was actually used by the ancients to travel instantaneously around the world.   According to Erragar’s argument, they were able to do this by focussing the current of the tide in a particular area using standing stones. If a person chose to surrender themselves to it, the Tide would carry them away, resulting in them disappearing and reappearing in a different place entirely.   Though, how he came to this conclusion remains to be seen. He fled Malvarron after the fall of the Duchy, with the only thing remaining of his was an incomplete research paper now held at the Bridgeport Guild of Scholars in a secret vault.

Perhaps most famous for his published Theory of Soul Scars in 1068 A.E, Zeverrias Erragar was a magical scholar and pedagogue at the The Erragar School of Arcana of which his older brother Albertus was the high master.   From a long line of powerful magi, Erragar was extremely talented in his field, however, he fled after the Vanguard Revolution in 1331 A.E and hasn’t been heard from since.
