Runic pen

A runic pen is a magical writing instrument used to apply magical residue to a surface, usually paper, wood or stone, for working more difficult weaves or working them on a larger scale. Historically, runic pens are a bit of mystery since no one knows for sure who invented them or how many even exist.

Historical runic pens

The Oak is a wooden runic pen held in a secure museum within the Carlinham Historical Museum. It was discovered in the last century of the Age of Peace. Though it is no longer in working order, the Oak has been studied by many researchers through the Ages, allowing the current magical and scientific communities to get a better understanding of the weave arrays allowing the mixing of otherwise volatile magical strands, such as water and lightning weaves or the faith and astral weaves.   The Order of the Firsts supposedly own a collection of runic pens with which they records the events of each and every Ages within their tomes, preserving untold knowledge in this manner. No representative of the Order has ever confirmed or deny this rumour, leading many conspiracy theorists to believe they at least own one such pen.

Mechanics & Inner Workings

The runic pen hold a miniature weave array within its body that is designed to pull power from the local elemental and astral weaves. The spiral shape of the containment weave also allows for a good mixing of the elements and an even release of the power when inscribing. The added element of the astral allows for the ethereal elemental forces to be given a physical element, in the form of a powerful magical spark.   Because of the power involved, a modulator at the top of the pen allows for the power output of the pen to be controlled. The force yielded can then be adjusted to prevent unnecessary damage to the surface being inscribed. This also means that a well-made runic pen will inscribe paper as easily as stone.
