The Forvel Phoenix Myth in Asperyon | World Anvil

The Forvel Phoenix

Summary

The myth of the Forvel Phoenix is centred around Mount Forvel, a dormant volcano in the region of the Forvel Peaks (which is where the name of those mountains originated) in somewhat contested territory currently held by the Esalvian Freehold. Mount Forvel is mostly known for being home of one of the largest (currently sealed and inactive) rifts between planes that leads to the elemental plane of fire.
"When the stars fall, the red phoenix rises
On her wings fly the dawn or the death of all..." (Unknown Oracle, Dawn Era)
As local myth holds, when the rift opens again it will herald the ‘End of All’ - a rather more simplified name for Asperyon’s version of an apocalypse. Supposedly the ensuing (and assumedly stable) portal to the plane of fire will have been opened from the other side, releasing the Primordial Titan of Fire Lokhos back into the prime material plane to restart the War of Primordials where it left off, along with a tide of all the red dragons who were banished alongside Thedrunn in reprisal for his betrayal and murder of Sephoria, the original leader of the red dragonflight.   While some people are of the opinion that the Forvel Phoenix myth indicates the appearance of a literal phoenix, flying from the opened rift to serve as prelude and warning to the return of Lokhos, a counter suggestion is that the red dragonflight’s former leader herself will be resurrected. In this version of the tale Sephoria’s revival leads to the opening conflict of the apocalypse being Sephoria and Thedrunn fighting across Asperyon’s skies in the open in single combat, to allow her to regain her honour and dominion over red dragons should their battle go in her favour.

Historical Basis

While there is definite historical and factual basis of there once being a large rift to the elemental plane of fire at the site of Mount Forvel, prophecies about the end of the world are generally taken with a large grain of salt by academics. The myth appears to be more dominant in elven and genasi cultures, rather than human ones, which is to be expected given that human civilisation did not even begin in any real way until long after the Dawn Era and the Duermir who initially held the territory prior to being driven into the Underdark by the Giscellans have not been present in the lands around Mount Forvel for centuries.
