Awarding of the Crown of the Magus

the greatest honour any Mageguard can receive

The Crown of The Magus is one of the three most prestigious awards that can be granted to a member of the Mageguard. It is granted to any Mageguard that performs exceptional feats of bravery and skill that are seen to have saved the entirety of Austur.   The "crowning", as the ceremony is often called, is so rarely done, and a celebration of such exceptionalism, that it is treated like a festival day in Landen, and overseen by The Council. The actual "crown", the simple bloodcopper headpiece, is presented to the recipient by the Curiya themselves.

History

The exact origin of the concept of the award is not known. The concept of the crown as a symbol of leadership and honour was carried through the generations from ancient Fallen stories, but there was no explicit record of the Magus wearing or owning such a headpiece. Awarding a crown as an honorific to Mageguard award goes as far back as the fourth century in the Caalesh Accord, and this was formalised into the three honorific crowns (Magus, Sheridan, and Valour) at some point in the early days after Unification.   The first recorded awarding of the Crown of the Magus, was in 586AS to Chaka of Catric, on the completed construction of the great Ora Curtain Wall, now most commonly referred to as Chaka's Curtain.

Components and tools

The crown itself has three elements.
  • the unadorned bloodcopper coronet (presented by the Curiya at the crowning ceremony)
  • the circular rosinca and sphairite set service brooch (presented at a semi-private award feast after the crowning by the Tessar Prima)
  • the ceremonial helmet of the recipient, modified to have the coronet permanently soldered to it (completed following the ceremony by the Smith Guild, and presented privately by the recipients commanding officer)
  • Participants

The key participants in the ceremony are:
  • the participant - receiving the honour
  • the participants direct commanding officer -presenting the recipient to The Council
  • The Council of Austur - oversight of the ceremony
  • The Councillor for the Mageguard and Borders - receiving the recipient and giving a speech to the assembled on the role and importance of the Mageguard and the defence of Austur
  • the Maitr - receiving the recipient and giving a speech to the assembled on the values and importance of The Book of the Guard
  • the Tessar Prima - the presentation of the recipients career history and notable deeds, leading to the presentation of the recipient's deeds that specifically warrant the award of the Crown of the Magus
  • the Curiya - the final speech extolling the greatness of Austur and the value of the recipients deeds, followed by the actual "crowning" of the recipient
  • "There is no honour greater or praise higher, than to bear the Crown of the Magus, to follow in the wake of the first Ashvaaryan to fight and risk his life for the collective safety of humanity."
