Witches

"Witches" are the name given to a specific brand of post-apocalyptic nomads that roam the central regions of Asherah's supercontinent after the collapse. Influenced by a combination of overzealous religious practices in late pre-collapse societies, counter-culture neoreligions and practices from extinct indigenous or historical cultures, witches wander the world as messengers, messiahs, spiritual (and sometimes medical) doctors and storytellers. Many are considered insane beyond reason, or at least delusional and detached from reality, by the more conservative, but in many small communities their tales, teachings and fervor are treated as legitimate and important.   Whether witches are experiencing delusions, hallucinations and detachment from reality or are simply deeply devoted to their beliefs is up for debate, but regardless which category a given witch falls into, they are important icons in post-collapse cultures and valued for what they bring to the table. They are also known to help and advise travellers and the lost, though there are also cautionary tales of witches who offer people an unspoken test in exchange for assistance, with failure of the test - which is often meant to challenge a person's compassion, generosity or situational wisdom - resulting in negative events of varying severity, ranging from the testee experiencing an inconvenience or humiliation to putting them in danger of lack of food/water, illness, attack by predators or injury by the environment.   Witches are usually easy to recognise by their tendencies to adorn themselves in unusual decorative fashions; many wear striking or unsettling symbols, craft ornaments from anything from wood to bone, are laden with jewellery and other trinkets acquired during their travels, and wear clothes made of salvaged material that is often mismatched.   Whether the metaphysical phenomena and entities that witches lay their faith in are real or not is unknown and largely irrelevant; a witch's power and influence comes from self-conviction and the acting out of what they uphold, based on their experiences, as absolute personal truth.
