The Sawyer Imperial Company

The Sawyer Empire began as a Pretannian trade company chartered on the 1st day of the First Month in 678 REP, and gained its independence through a revolt (935 - 949 REP). The young empire is known for its corruption and oppression of its people.   The Sawyer Imperial Company, or Sawyers as they are called, was founded as The Governor and Company of the Merchants of Cair Lundem trading into Soir Onorach. Over time, the Soir Company came to be called simply Sawyer, which was the common pronunciation of their name. Founded as a trading company with the miss named continent of Soir Onorach, the Sawyers eventually grew to become one of the great world powers.   Our understanding of the Sawyer Company must begin with a strange quirk of Pretannian thought. Two large continents flank the world, with Prythain in the center. These two continents are simply called Thiar Onorach, "The Honorable West," and Soir Onorach, "The Honorable East." Many nations vied for control over trade with these two large landmasses.

After the Witan was disbanded, power was given to the regional governors and their administrators.

The Collapse of the Tudao Armada

After the defeat of the Tudao Armada in 665 REP, a power vacuum emerged in Soir Onorach. In 666 REP, a small group of merchants were granted the right to sail to Onorach in hopes they could open a permanent trade relationship with the nations there.   After two years of planning, on 4/10/668 REP, three ships sailed to Onorach to begin negotiations. Only one ship survived the voyage and returned in 671 REP without reaching an agreement. Three more ships set sail in 673 REP, but all were lost at sea.

The Rise of the Fiann Oir, The Golden Warriors

Another group of merchants who called themselves The Fiann Oir, "The Golden Warriors," convened to establish the route they would take to Soir Onorach on 9/22/676 REP. Two days later, they reconvened and resolved to apply to the queen for a license to establish trade.

Queen Sabela I granted a Royal Charter to "The Governor and Company of the Merchants of Cair Lundem trading into Soir Onorach" on 12/31/677 REP. In the charter, the government took no shares, and claimed no control over their actions. Power concentrated in the aristocrats and rich merchants of Prythain. The Seal of The Governor and Company of the Merchants of Cair Lundem trading into Soir Onorach popped up on ships and business throughout the empire.

The First Voyage

Sir Jacoby Glandun lead the first Sawyer Company voyage in 678 REP, and returned two years later with more information and contacts that would help them establish trade. The ship's hold was filled with rare spices and gems from the Bahaadur Empire.

The Second & Third Voyage

In March, 681 REP, Sir Hendry Bailelar commanded the second voyage with Sir Wully Arthach. Shortly after the returned, Sir Wully Arthach lead the third voyage (684-687 REP) aboard the Red Dragon, Sir Illiam Cetrería on the Iddal, and Captain Daveth Arthach on the Consent.

The Fourth Voyage

Sender Highspear was appointed captain of the Ascension and commander of the 4th voyage with Risteard Rahl on the Union. In March 685 REP, they sailed for Soir Onorach. They established their first trade post established in Munggah Kali in 685 REP.

After the defeat of the Jeterhach forces by Prythain at the Battle of Garimaapoorn in 689 REP, the Company received permission to establish a foothold from the Crown and the Bahaadur Empire.   Later that year, King Seamus I instructed Sir Tuum Reh to visit the Bahaadur Emperor Sansarako Vijeta to give the Company exclusive rights to establish trade and reside in Sooraj. After seven years of negotiation, the Company established a permanent trading posts in Sooraj.   For 15 years, relations with the Bahaadur Emperor tightened to the point where he extended a trade license to the Company in 711 REP.   The Company established a trading posts in Maharasa in 716 REP and continued expanding to the point where they had to name 23 Master Merchants and Governors of the Company in 724 REP. In 745 REP, the Company established a trading posts in Mahana'i.   King Siarl II granted the Company in 747 REP, the rights to autonomous territorial acquisitions, to mint money, to command fortresses and troops and form alliances, to make war and peace, and to exercise both civil and criminal jurisdiction over the acquired territory.   In 759 REP, Liam Falta went the Bahaadur governor of Saura to obtain exclusive rights to trade in the empire, but the Company Governor Josiah Plentyn intervened causing the Emperor to break off negotiations. Relations continued to suffer, and in 766 REP, a Bahaadur fleet attacked Mahana’i. After a year of fighting, the company surrendered, and sent envoys to plead for a pardon. The envoys prostrated before the Emperor and pledged better behavior and paid a large indemnity. The Emperor withdrew his forces. Later that year, the Company established a trading posts in Khala.

The Pretannian Company trading in Soir Onoroch

Concerns about the Sawyer Company's power arose in the Motherland. Prythain established Pretannian Company trading in Soir Onoroch in 775 REP. Members of Fiann Oir quickly purchased majority shares in the new company and dominated it. Ten years later, the two companies merged.   In 794 REP, the Bahaadur Emperor waived all trade duties on the Company, which continued to prosper. The Militarization of the Sawyer Company   From 827 to 840 REP, the Company expanded its military 8.7 times its original size. On 6/23/834 REP. the Company gained control over Ozen after the Battle of the Red Flower at Qizil Gul.   Pretannia still fretted over the Companies powers. The Pretannian High Court ruled on 12/24/834 REP, that while the crown enjoyed sovereignty over all lands, only lands acquired by the crown under its right of conquest were vested to the it. This allowed the Company to consolidate its control over Soir Onoroch over the next century.   From 9/24/839 to 10/6/839 REP, while Prythain was embroiled in war, the Company took the opportunity to expand into Bakawan. The next year the Company began expanding its military another 2.6 times over the following 15 years.

The Sawyer Wars of Conquest

Undaunted, the Company waged The First Voriyarsa War (852-859 REP) and the Second Em'me War (857-861 REP).   The Soir Onorach Act of 861 differentiated the companies political functions from its commercial, and established a Pretannian Central Authority for Onorach. Then the Soir Onorach Act of 863 allowed the Governor General and the Commander-in-chief in Onorach could be held in the same office.

The Third & Fourth Em'me War

The Ozen Rebellion and the Sawyer War of Independence

In 935 REP, The Ozen Rebellion started. The next day, the Sawyer Company rebelled against Prythain. They crushed the rebels the following year.
