Bara Magna

The party landed on Bara Magna following the destruction of the Gozanti at the hands of Genki's crew. They were able to find, repair, and eventually pilot an Oni war machine, designated Juggernaut by the rampant AI, Captain Rimmer. They rode it to a large city, bartering the machine to the local governor in exchange for credits and a ride off the planet, much to the anger of the Cult of the Machine God.

Geography

Bara Magna is the second planet from the sun in the Balagos region. Due to the extreme radiation it receives from Balagos most of its surface is covered in uninhabitable desert. The few populated locations either gather tightly around oases or have employed large drills to access water sources deep below the planets surface.   The main city that the players visited was run the Governor Sand. It was built up around a large water pumping station as well as a space tether. It is now also home to a working Oni war machine.

Localized Phenomena

Sandstorms on Bara Magna can be extremely dangerous. With very little geography to stop them, large sandstorms can grow and grow until they encompass the entire planet it a thick blanket of sand.

Fauna & Flora

The flora and fauna on Bara Magna have to be very hardy in order to survive.   Large ant-lions burrow through the sand, ranging from the size of a small dog, up to the size of a bull elephant. They like to lay in wait under the surface, sensing the vibrations of the shifting sands as its prey walks above them, before burrowing up and snapping up their prey with their large pincers.   Bulbous cacti are common in rocky areas where what little moisture is in the air tends to collect and run off the boulders. Spiky and tough skinned, most animals on the planet either avoid the plants, or have specially evolved to deal with their defences. The humanoid inhabitants of the planet have learnt that cutting open the cactus produces a thick, juice like substance. While the cactus juice is very refreshing at first, the drinker quickly becomes disoriented as the juices hallucinogenic properties take hold. Once the effect wears off, drinkers often find themselves impossibly lost, and thirstier than before due to over exertion under the drug.

Natural Resources

Other than the sandstone that is mined from the planet for building purposes, Bara Magna's main export is scrap metal. Lots of people eke out a living working as scrappers, climbing into the dangerous bellies of the ancient war machines and tearing them apart. The scrap metal is often sold to Bracca.

History

Due to the low levels of moisture on the planet, it is one of the few locations in the Asgorath System that one can easily see the remains of the Great Faction Wars. The surface is littered with abandoned machines of war, technological marvels that have sat dormant for a thousand years. The knowledge to power and pilot these metal titans has long since been lost by the local population, perhaps encouraged by the Twin Sun's so they could not be used for rebellion against their rule.

Tourism

Being so inhospitable, Bara Magna is not an ideal tourist destination. Some history enthusiasts travel to the planet to the planet to examine the titanic remains of the Colonial Federations war machines, though usually leave disappointed when they discover nothing new. Rumours of a working Oni turning up near the city limits have reignited interest though.
