History

The seaside city of West Port owes its' wealth to a strategic alliance with the pirate clans that ravaged the coastal villages and a small manner of good luck. The city began as a sister to the already bustling port town of Ablegarth, across the Amerian Sea, a smaller body of water off the southern coast of Elos. The merchants who settled in the fledgling town of West Port had an obstacle to overcome in the form of long naval voyages around the Cape of Elos.   This was always the most dangerous part of any sailing north from West Port as the waves and wind were deadly to any but the most skilled crew. So they devised a way to bypass the cape itself and allow for a defensible passage to the western coast. A canal was carved out near the southwestern province of Cyr, an older island population that were among the first to settle near Elos.   The new canal needed workers and many were conscripted from the surrounding villages to aid Westport and Ablegarth to build not only quickly, but in secret as well. The pirate clans operated out of the island chains that make up Cyr and they would immediately attack any suspicious ships in the area. Ablegarth was successful in holding the attention of the naval force that the clans had positioned in an embargo around West Port long enough that the conscripted workers were able to complete the canal.   What ensued in the following weeks is considered to be the single most important naval disaster in the history of Elos. The canal was carved from the earth, creating a small artificial river cutting through a narrow land bridge and the dirt walls on either side holding back the sea were thick, allowing for the workers to work quickly in dry earth and break the barriers afterward. This left a large, empty
