Roaldrine (ROL-drin)
The merchant town of Roaldrine is the main settlement in The Altiplane of Tota, located at the very mouth of Kogur's Gulch between it and the Raina River delta. Although its position had made it relevant as a staging port inland, Roaldrine experienced a sudden explosion of development in the last forty years after expeditions upriver into the altiplane revealed the area past the gulch was mottled with mounds - buried ruins, palaces, mausoleums and vaults of the long-vanished Palanq civilization that had inhabited the region in ages past before disappearing due to unknown circumstances.
The promise of Palanqin treasure led to interest both private and public in the area. With Tota being located between the viceroyalties of Sieguay and Nogir as well as the capital territories, it had always been ‘shared’ between the three regions yet also self-governed to a point… yet with the discovery of riches inside the Highlands, the Viceroys of Sieguay and Nogir as well as His Majesty King Enger Guldez y Camor began efforts to integrate the land into their respective territories. The political thunderstorm that ensued left Roaldrine essentially self-governing - and it is from that vacuum that the Adventuring Guilds of Roaldrine were born. Starting as cabals of competing adventurers and researchers willing to brave the river and enter the highlands on the search for relics, nowadays the guilds are cultural institutions in Roaldrine - being part of one opens many doors, leading one is akin to a nobility title in prestige, and it is not unknown for them to war against one another, have feuds, or even undergo succession crisis when the time to elect new Guildmasters come… or when a previous Guildmaster, thought lost, returns to claim their leadership.
