Gnoll (NOL)

The Gnoll are a bipedal hyaenid nomadic people that originated in the dry savannahs and jungles of Lomogran. Of the many 'beastkin' of the world, Gnoll are some of the most striking - imposingly tall, heavily muscled, with morphology that heavily resembles that of their digitigrade 'spirit companions' the hyenas, the greatest symbol of Gnoll sentience and civilized nature is their ability (and preference) to stand upright.   Gnoll are nomadic, and have never formed a nation of their own - instead spending their time wandering in tribal groups throughout Lomogran. Their culture is jarringly alien for most non-Gnoll, mostly due to the Gnoll's reverence of endocannibalism as a form of ancestor worship and funerary rite. The Gnoll are the only known sentient race to be innately scavenger, and as a result they tend to live in tune with the ecosystems around them and to never settle permanent locations in favour of moving with the migratory ebbs and flows of predators and prey.   There have been cases of Gnoll warlords uniting several tribes - and in every case, this has led them to shift from wandering scavenging nomads into aggressively-expansionist hordes in an attempt to keep everyone fed. This has caused the Gnoll to get a bad reputation as slavers and raiders in parts of Lomogran. Overall, however, the Gnoll are known for being a peculiar combination of deeply spiritual and oddly pragmatic at the same time.   In recent times, the Gnoll were the victims of a targeted enslavement campaign under the orders of the Nabalin Empire, who coveted their physical abilities for use in their conquest of Galatyr. The ripple effects of this decision is still being felt, as the depopulation of Lomograni Gnoll led to environmental collapse in their native savannahs and the incorporation of Gnoll into Galatyr led to significant culture shock.   The Gnoll population in the Kingdom of Mir is almost entirely descended from escaped slaves that joined Alfana in her exile. They've settled almost solely in Calaim, welcomed by the Gleambroks among the many beastkin that call the viceroyalty their home - but the dense forests and high humidity of the region is very harsh on their biology and have kept them from gaining numbers. With no environment in the nation particularly suited to their lifestyle and their usual scavenging lifestyle crowded out by the Roc Condors of the Altidores and many other non-sentient scavengers, most Gnoll instead form mendicant communities that travel from large city to large city offering services and counsel for coin.
