Personal history

Baumgartner was born to a noble family close to the royalty of Coul. He was instructed in riding, swordfighting, leadership, diplomacy, and many other skills, at the Royal Academy of Coul. He met the prince of Coul in his childhood, and become good friends.   Later, when he was a young adult, he asked his old friend the prince to allow him to take some troops and hunt down a group of bandits who had been robbing and killing civilians in northern Coul. The prince figured that it didn't particularly matter who dealt with the bandits, and he might as well give Baumgartner a chance to prove himself.   Baumgartner set off, taking a regiment of 30 horsemen and 30 swordsmen(Also mounted, but purely for travel and not for battle.) After weeks of hard travel through the barely tamed wilds, Baumgartner and his men set about exterminating the bandits. They discovered a much larger network of raiders and bandits, who used it to create tenuous peace between the group so they would have more energy to put towards thievery and murder, and to safely trade stolen goods among themselves. The local leaders had been receiving bribes from the brigands, and had kept quiet about the issue. Baumgartner spent the next month sequentially eradicating each group of bandits and bringing them to justice. He distributed the stolen goods to each village that had been stolen from, and took nothing for himself. Throughout all this, he kept his men unified and determined, losing only a total of 12 men throughout the series of attacks.   Upon his return, the prince was extremely impressed by Baumgartner's exploits, and gave him several more jobs doing what was essentially royal mercenary work, including clearing goblin camps located in northeast Coul. After 18 months of doing this, the prince offered him a place at the Royal Academy where he could teach his skills to aspiring warriors. Baumgartner accepted gladly, and he stayed there for 3 years until the king died, and his friend the Prince was crowned as the Fourth King of Coul. After this, the king nominated Baumgartner as the chief military advisor of Coul, where he managed the military affairs of Coul's standing army and acted as a consultant to the King. He advised the king to begin the Coul-Midland militarization, and he led said militarization as - finally - General Baumgartner.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Failures & Embarrassments

Midway through his career as a mercenary for the prince, Baumgartner made a grave mistake. Tasked with clearing out a cave-full of goblins, Baumgartner did not take the necessary precautions. He had been having great success with other missions, and had become arrogant and believed himself to be unstoppable. He had neglected to scout out the area around the cave. He had neglected to keep his regiment's presence secret. He had neglected to carefully enter the cave in formation. And he paid in blood for this, as the traps set by the goblins went off with a bang, felling many of his men and injuring more. The goblins came screaming out of the shadows, wielding scimitars and shortbows in their hands. Baumgartner and his men were driven off by the goblins, and many of his force were killed. The blame was placed squarely on Baumgartner, as it should have been. He could have taken the cave with far fewer deaths on his part, had he been more careful.   He had been routed before this, and would be aftter, but in those cases there was nothing he could of done. He took his loss with dignity and did what he could to help his troops. Here, he let his arrogance get the better of him and made a foolish decision that cost fellow soldiers their lives.

Morality & Philosophy

Baumgartner takes a simplistic approach to morality. In his eyes, the greatest thing a person can do in their life is bring happiness to others. All crimes, all suffering, all sins, are forgiven, as long as they are outweighed by what good a person has done in their life. He views the people who have been killed by he or his troops as those that needed to die, in order to prevent the suffering of countless more. He wishes not to kill, but views doing such as a tool needed to bring peace.
