Bloodrot

A disease ridden with mystery and horror, Bloodrot is an infection of spores from the Blood-moss fields. It's unsure what exactly causes this phenomena, as typically inhalation of the spores will only result in lung damage rather than any neurological disorder, but the bane of every field-tenders shift is the rumours of an outbreak of Bloodrot in the fields.   Many theorise that the purpose of the Bloodrot infection is to spread the spores further; as the host of the infected and active spores progresses in the disease, they lose control over their own motor-functions and emotions. The body becomes a mindless husk, the skin reddening as moss begins to grow from the inside of the body as the victim continues to survive. Eventually, the long shoots that typically grow from blood-moss begin to erupt through the skin, rendering a humanoid shape with random fungal protrusions that typically gather around the eye sockets, mouth and ears. Autopsies have shown that the fungal growths originate from veins of the body, often bursting and breaking any tissue in the way.    Typically, death will come within a few days of painful transformation due to extreme pain and internal organ damage-- but the journey for the spores is not over. The spores then continue to move the hosts' body onwards to the nearest body of water, taking over all motor functions albeit in a much more slow and shambling way than a living being would. This is so that the body can disintegrate, and the spores spread further - these active spores will grow bloodmoss fields along the banks of in-land rivers, which often have to be cleansed to avoid an outbreak of Bloodrot within the city.
