Airships: History, Creation and Types.
A brief history and contextualization of the invention of Airships.
The Sea of Hearts is said to have been named that because it was seen from far above. That is one of the earliest records that we have of magic likely being used to make man fly. This is always some fashion of goal for the intelligent races, to move fast through the air like the course of a spell. And it is accomplish-able, with the understanding and guidance of a powerful mage, one can fly for a time! However, no matter how high one flies in this time, to the chagrin of the majority, they still must return to the ground. And either of their own volition or the pull of gravity, they do return to the ground. And the mage who has guided them to this less than spectacular conclusion makes his departure. For his skills are potent, but limited. He cannot fulfill the true wish of the man, he can only show him what the sky feels like for a brief moment. A brief rush and thrill of life and true freedom as wind rushes past you and you find yourself as something else for a time. In this manner, this explains why the favor of The Tinkerer's Guild has latched onto the hearts and minds of the masses in a similar way that magic has captivated them for eons. The Mage is one of a select group, a group that is few in number and rarely has time or inclination to let the common man take hold of his fortune and seek his dreams. The gasses that have been discovered and collected allow one to rise to the clouds and be carried aloft by the winds. One can only imagine what stories will be told and things will be undertaken should the guild’s attempts to guide these contraption through the skies come to fruition. It will unveil a type of connectedness and transit across the globe unlike anything magic has propelled us to so far. For this technology is not for the mage, but for the common man. He will stop at nothing to truly grasp it.
The Invention of Airships
Hot Air Balloon. In the year 638, gnomish inventor Qurilion Blackstaff devised a Hot Air Balloon raised into the air by “Lighter than Air” gasses released from a number of magma vents found in the Mesa on an expedition. After collecting a fair amount of this gas, he brought it back to the Tinkerer’s guild in Togasei and began work on something new. He fashioned a Balloon that used this gas to float and made controls to rise and to land. For most thoughts, this was just a hot air balloon. A simple concept that never really caught on anywhere, but was vaguely known of. The difference is the resilience of the cell-type cushions that he filled with the gas and used to make the balloon fly. As word spread about his invention, long dormant thoughts, ideas and dreams of allowing flight in a manner not dissimilar to magic sprung to life. The Wizards of the College even put out a statement regarding the invention and potential developments with the current plans. With the rate Quriion was getting donations and apprentices, it seemed like his luck had come in and he would bring a golden age of transportation to Ithungsida. Then, sixteen years after the first explosion rocked the world and shattered people’s understandings of the world. And only two years into Qurilion’s new life and goals. Cassiopeia ignited the second atomic bomb and changed the course of history. In the ensuing year of chaos, Qurilion refused to take the “Starlight Railroad” to safety, preferring to stand with his people and his country. He is presumed to have died as most did during the Funeral March.
Bullette Powder/EnginesIn the late 800s, the old tinkerer’s guild building was finally unearthed from the rubble. And while most things had been destroyed, some blueprints remained. Rexa Thedas, a curious human living in the area, proposed a trip back to the Mesa to find the source of this “Lighter than Air” gas. The expedition set out in 901st year with plenty of funding to help unearth the secrets of ancient Araetule. While there, the group had to take refuge in a medium sized city of Hobgoblins ruled by the daughter of Brodray `Champion of Garma” and Pursir `Faithful of Firn” due to a surge of horrible Bullettes. While there, Rexa discovered a ritual concoction of explosive material used by the citizens of Kanak for noise to scare away the creatures it was made from. After smelling it, and tinkering with it, Rexa realized that the concoction actually made the “Lighter than Air” gas when it ignited. And the ignition was so forceful that it could be used to power pistons or gears. She shared this information as a musing and it spread like wildfire. The “Day of Gratuitous Explosions” is still celebrated in the city. Only a few years after this information was discovered, the advent of the “gunslinger” came into play. However, Rexa took the knowledge of this "Bullette Powder" back to the guild and built upon it. As explosive weaponry came into fashion, Rexa helped to build an engine powered in the same way. She took this technology to the nation of Remniscent Monarchy of SosIwa and offered to make the ancient tracks that had been laid by old Araetule for the great engines trains usable again. Records show that by 940, with the backing of the government of SosIwa, Trains once again stormed the Feng Mountains. Too bad that in 942, Vhaskus made his declarations and destroyed Aegis .
Bullette AirshipIn the middle of the Orcish Incursion, the final slot for the advancement of Airships slotted into place. A young Kobold by the name of Blood Claw found the ancient prototype of a Hot Air Balloon and used it to save his family when he repurposed an engine of a destroyed mountain train to fill the balloon and give it motion. His family just barely escaped the claws of Orcish Raiders and made their way to a stronghold of Aarakocra and Goliaths high in the peaks of the Feng Mountains in 973. While there are no more records of the kobold called Blood Claw, his connection was rapidly built upon and made into something that Qurillion of old had only just thought of in his future. For this was the creation of the first true airship.
Bullette Powder? What did the Trains use before??Many Scholars have questioned the explosive advancement of Araetule and the lack of ability to follow in their footsteps. This has lead many to a logical quandry; If the trains that made their way through the Feng Mountains were no longer operational... What happened? The answer is hard to understand and brings more questions than most would like, but based on recovered information from the ruins of Araetule and the survivors... It seems that some of the things that used to work, simple chemical changes and reactions, ones that are even seen in nature still. They no longer work if someone tries to make it work. With this, the truth of the matter must be that the gods have locked away the majority of this technology. Perhaps to keep people from falling in the footsteps of Ancient Araetule.
Man Ascends to places he is not meant to be.Many people believe that flight is not the natural state of man and these abominations should not be used. However, a fair amount of industry ignores this.
Those that are meant to fly can do so effortlessly, we are not Aarakocra, we are not Avariel. Leave them the skies and let us remain where we belong, upon the ground.
Where are these quotes from?We have records provided from both the Sentient Workers' Union and the Wizards of the College Thankfully these both included information on the Official Comments at the time.
Types of AirshipsThere are 5 Usual types of Airship, the BlackStaff, the Blood Claw, the Rexa, the Hongden, and the Togasei.
