The New Year’s Star

The New Year’s Star is by far one of the oddest phenomena in all of the Daralei. There is little explanation for the blue-white comet that travels across the equator of the Daralei every year, passing into sight on the minute that the year turns. It travels across the sky, from the west and can be seen for little more than a second disappearing to the east. However, instead of disappearing all together, it instead leaves a cobalt blue and royal purple streak of ether in the sky, much like the northern and southern lights, that can be seen for an hour before fading. Additionally, after 5 minutes since it's passing, it creates sapphire snow, a brief flurry of ice crystals turned pale blue by small traces of cobalt. These flurries last about 10 minutes before stopping.   How and why this comet and it's effects occur is a mystery, one that the people of the Daralei do not yet have the technology to understand. However, several theories have sprung from the occurrence of the comet. Some say it is undeniable proof of the divine, that the gods would present the peoples of the Daralei with a way to understand the passage of time. Others use it to support the idea of a round world, and that the comet does in fact circle the planet. The Daralei is thought to be infinite, so a comet that circles the world could possibly be the stone that shatters this theory.   Whatever it's origins, divine or natural, the New Year's Star is one of the most important effects in the measuring of time and creation of the modern day calendar of every race in the world. It is the one connecter between all cultures and races of the world, and is seen as the symbol of unity. Festivals are set up every year to view the passing of the comet and the welcoming of the new year across almost every continent in the world.
