The Silent Screechers

We are born from nothing and we will return to nothing. But if we leave nothing behind to be remembered by, we will have truly accomplished nothing.
— Crable Yile
In secret, they dwell, where others are afraid to tread. Masked as demons of the fog, they take on the forms of the apex predator of the The Grot. The Silent Screechers are the inhabitants of The Masked Village, the home of runaways, outcasts, criminals, and any without a home willing to brave the deathly air of the The Gauze Grot.

Structure

At the top of the hierarchy lies the Masked Chieftain, head of the tribe. Although they are technically in charge, they are more of an inspiring leader than a power hungry chief, and they are not above the law. The role of Chieftain has been passed down in the Yile family ever since its founding by Crable Yile. Currently, the position lies with Pina Yile.

Culture

All members of the secret society have been shunned from society and presumed dead, whether they be Human or Glayshan, and so view the outside world from their experiences - a harsh and cruel existence.

Public Agenda

The Silent Screechers leaders work towards safety and security for their people; everyone there save those born and raised in The Masked Village has suffered at the hands of others and its the responsibility of the tribe to ensure a fresh start free from oppression.

Assets

Their is little rivalry between fellow brothers and sisters in arms, mostly thanks to the system of sharing resources between residents equally. Those who cannot hunt the Screechers can help with growing crops underground. Those too old to work can teach children and document important goings on. The sick are cared for and no one goes without food and shelter if they are fit to work and elect to do so.

History

The haven brotherhood was founded by Crable Yile , a Glayshan noble who was run out of court along with her retainers, forced into The Gauze Grot. Only 8 of them were able to escape and 1 presumably died in the mist after being separated. By chance they came across an entrance to an underground cave which lead to a small body of water. Swimming through, they entered into a safe space on the other side - the gauze cannot travel through water. It was from here that they lay their home and after a time of researching the native Screechers, they discovered a way to attach their heads to their own and breathe above ground. It was here that their name came from.

Territories

Less ownership and more residence, the Silent Screechers are the only society situated in The Gauze Grot.

Foreign Relations

The Silent Screechers are at odds with both Human and Glayshan society but they have nowhere near the necessary numbers to attack either side, nor do they have the desire to. Their main priority is to stay safe and stay hidden.

Agriculture & Industry

A number of underground farms are plotted out in the interweaving cave system of The Masked Village, but only select plants can withstand the harsh environment of the Grot leading to limited choice. Iron ore is in abundance deeper into the tunnels, providing the hunters with weaponry and a functional air lock to keep out the Gauze for those without the mask of the Screecher as an alternative to the original water blocked tunnel used by the Yile retainers initially.

Education

Children are taught how to hunt and farm (depending on their ability) and at the age of 16, potential hunters don the mask of the Screecher and officially take up their role as hunters for the tribe. Others are shown the ways of agriculture and how to harvest Clomesh. All children are taught the key philosophies of the Silent Screechers; these include putting the needs of the tribe over individual interest and how all sufferers of any kind are welcome in The Masked Village.

Infrastructure

All residence and manufacturing is performed underground, away from the danger of the Gauze, safely tucked away in winding tunnels signposted with directions and supported by beams of wood and metal. Often, a family will share a room with another family or individual people will be assigned to groups. The rooms for sleeping and living space are the spaces furthest away from the entrance outside with the armoury and barracks being closer. Compost toilets cause farming to be more efficient and an underground stream provides a steady supply of water.
