Dwarves

Dwarves are short, stout, and strong, devoted to their clan first, their traditions second, and their secrecy third. They have great skill in stone- and metalworking, as well as great resilience, but their traditional isolation separates them from other peoples.

The Secret People

Dwarves are Secrecy's mortal race, created under the Divine Pact. They are masters of building, mining, and smithing, but rarely share their secrets with outsiders or allow them into their underground halls. They endure all circumstances with stoic fortitude, rarely showing strong emotion. A wrong done to one dwarf spreads to the entire clan: one of the few breaches of the dwarven shroud of secrecy comes when an outsider does a grievous harm to a dwarf, leading the entire clan to hunt them down. Dwarves might be great artists, explorers, or diviners, but if so, the outside world knows nothing of it.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Dwarves, like all mortals, share the same bipedal body shape, though they tend to be short and stocky. Both male and female dwarves have long beards and enhanced ability to see in the dark. Their skin tone ranges from dark brown to tan, and their hair is black or gray. Some dwarves have the ability to change their shape into that of any other mortal race. These dwarves, known as shrouded dwarves, are considered to be blessed by Secrecy and destined for greatness, though other mortals view them with suspicion.

Additional Information

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Dwarves inhabit the Iron Mountains in Aressa and other mountain ranges beyond it. They build great underground halls with aboveground mountainside terraces used to grow crops.

Change AppearanceAs an action, you can transform your appearance or revert to your natural form. You can’t duplicate the appearance of a creature you’ve never seen, and you revert to your natural form if you die. You decide what you look like, including your height, weight, facial features, the sound of your voice, coloration, hair length, sex, and any other distinguishing characteristics. You can make yourself appear as a member of another race, though none of your game statistics change. You also can’t appear as a creature of a different size than you, and your basic shape stays the same; if you’re bipedal, you can’t use this trait to become quadrupedal, for instance. Your clothing and other equipment don’t change in appearance, size, or shape to match your new form, requiring you to keep a few extra outfits on hand to make the most compelling disguise possible. Even to the most astute observers, your ruse is usually indiscernible. If you rouse suspicion, or if a wary creature suspects something is amiss, you have advantage on any Charisma (Deception) check you make to avoid detection.
Secrecy's BlessingYou gain proficiency with one of the following skills of your choice: Deception, Insight, Intimidation, or Persuasion.
Lifespan
375 to 425 years
Average Height

Average Weight
