The Edge of the World

The Edge of the World. The title the common folk give the region where civilization and wilderness collide. Many attempts have been made to tame these lands, and all have failed. The one remaining glimmer of hope in the region is a fortress city called Herford. The city is technically within the realm of The Divine Ütherreich, though they are so isolated they have only themselves to rely on.   Many adventurers are drawn to these lands of chaos in search of forgotten treasures and lost powers. Many of these treasure hunters are never seen again. Were the simply killed in search of untold wealth? Or have they succumbed to the evil that lurks in the deepest reaches of the wilderness?

Geography

The geographical features of the Edge of the World are varied, though dense forest dominates most of the land. A river flows from a nearby lake, though whatever lurks in the depths of the water has prevented any permanent settlements from gaining a foothold too close to the river's edge. An expansive marsh feeds the river on its southern bank, though few travellers enter the swampy forest to determine exactly how far it stretches.   A small chain of mountains strike the sky northwest of the fortress city of Herford. The locals have come to calling the chain the Cursed Mountains, for no adventurers return from its rocky grasp, and no dwarves have ever been able to master its caves and labyrinths. However, the horrific rumors that come from these mountains are often overshadowed by the promise of untold wealth beneath the granite roots of these mountains.   Nestled between the foothills of the Cursed Mountains is a small stretch of sandy desert, known as the hissing sands, where no rainfall can reach. A lone peak stands proud next to Herford, which the locals refer to as Bastion.

Fauna & Flora

Many unsavory types have made these untamed wilds their home. The Herford city guard can tell you of countless raids from the likes of goblins, orcs, gnolls, and more of their ilk. They also deal with the occasional bandit, looking for easy prey among the city's only supply chain.   Of course, beings much more foul than these have been spotted from time to time. Aberrations and abhorrent beasts roam these lands, though none of the citizens of Herford wander far enough from the city in order to find out exactly what lurks out there. Even so, many have reported sightings of horrific creatures from time to time. Most of the residents remember the day a griffon attacked the city and made off with the poor stable hand. A couple people swear they saw something that looked like a dragon flying around the summit of Bastion. Only a few believe her, but the herbalist claims she saw something that had the body of a bear, and the head and wings of a gigantic owl while she was out collecting herbs.
