The Burning of Thelenine
After Verdonne seized and occupied most of the city-states of the Kothic League, they laid siege to the city of Thelenine. Due to the comprehensive magical defenses of the city and the lack of mages within the Verdonnian military (due to the Mages' Recreance), the army was forced to employ creative strategies.
The Conflict
Prelude
Before the siege began, Verdonne took much of the Kothic League in order to cut off reinforcements and supply lines traveling between Balukthur and Milalthyr so that it could be taken. However, before attacking Milalthyr proper, Verdonne needed to take the Milalthyrian fortress city of Thelenine.
Battlefield
The entirety of the siege was fought in the bay and on the land surrounding Thelenine. The northeastern side of the city was a fortified bay, with large gates in between towers that stood guard on either side of the entrance to the bay. This area was assaulted by the Verdonnian navy.
On the southeastern and southern side of the city lies a dense forest, which the Verdonnian infantry used as cover.
The Engagement
The Verdonnian navy engaged the city's defenses of the bay with the primary intention of drawing attention away from the southern side of the city. Meanwhile, a medium-sized infantry force was deployed to the far side of the island, stealthily entering the forest through a river using rowboats. From there, they tunneled up against the wall. While the wall could not be tunneled underneath, this access allowed the troops to plant large amounts of explosives in concentrated areas of the wall. These charges were subsequently lit, creating a sizable breach in the wall wide enough for 10 men standing side by side to walk through. From this point, the infantry stormed the interior of the city and burnt everything in sight while the Thelenine guard rushed to defend the city.
