Helessa was born and raised at the Lance on the Isle of Air, where she lived until 115 NA. Though reared by a wet nurse, Helessa's mother Calisto was remarkably attentive in her upbringing, ensuring that she learned to speak Usap (typically called the Liddinawth tongue), as well as Vainan. This would lead to an interest in languages and a study of Viisianar, though she never spoke it fluently. In her youth, Helessa was a skilled dancer and studied spelling until her first blood, when her education became more appropriate to that of a noble young lady. She was taught hawking and riding, both extremely rare practices on the Isle of Air, as well as sewing, recitation, and stillness (the latter being peculiar to Clan Han'dylth and a handful of other great families).
It was widely assumed that, being their first and only daughter, Lord Ronart and Lady Calisto were preparing Helessa to wed some great lord. Rumors at the Lance spoke of Junos Ethel, second son to the Magnate of Ethel, who was three years younger than Helessa herself. Yet nothing official was ever announced, and if any such wedding was planned, these plans were abandoned with the death of Princess Alisann Beth. Beloved wife of Prince Bennerog Beth, mother to his four children, Alisann and Bennerog had been wed to reknit Clan Beth after the Fourth Brothers Rebellion. She gave him two sons, and though all of the East mourned her death, the legacy of the clan was largely considered secure. This would change in 115 NA, when their first son Dorrenog Beth was slain whilst squiring in a minor rebellion. With only the infant Bartimus left (a small and sickly child), King Bethraal II commanded his son to remarry almost immediately. The chosen bride was Lady Helessa, then aged twenty years, and considered by many to be the most beautiful woman in Revellia. The Liddinawth blood was strong in her, and many suspected it might lend legitimacy to Clan Beth's rule.
Their first child, Bethraal, was stillborn. Their second, Liesse, now serves as a novice at the High Hostel of Dorreon. The pair would suffer two miscarriages following this, the latter resulting in an illness lasting nearly a year. After her recovery, Helessa began to attempt a more active role in the ruling of the canton, but was largely rebuffed. This would be further frustrated when, in 125 NA, Helessa's mother Calisto died in her sleep. This caused a rift between Helessa and both her father Ronart and her husband Bennerog. This resulted in Helessa repairing to the Isle of Air to help with the governing of the Lance. With the recent passing of the Prince, Helessa has arranged to return to Revelback, reclaim her daughter Liesse, and aid in the governance of the realm.
