Tishthidh

This large town is the capital of the kingdom of Tiefhohl, and is slowly growing and may one day be a true city, but for the moment growth is small in the settlement and kingdom.

Demographics

Humans - 1219, Halflings - 659, Elves - 593, Gnomes - 329, Dwarves - 231, Others - 264

Government

Tiefhohl and is an absolute monarchy and as its capital so is Tishthidh this means that its king and founder, Aldus Schmiede, has supreme executive, legislative and judicial power. He writes the laws, he enforces them, and he sits in judgement of those who break them. Of course, he has advisors to help write the laws, and reeves to enforce them and judge those who break them. But ultimately all answer to him. Fortunately he’s a benevolent ruler, or at least tries to be.

Defences

The town’s defenses are rudimentary as of yet. Aldus is working to have earthwork ramparts built around the town but has just gotten started. His militia is small, and he relies on mercenaries from the south for defense. So far his biggest problem has been raids of humanoids (primarily goblinoids) from the east, however it’s only a matter of time before the Tågbaf mountains figure out that bypassing Ethfamen and Tatidär for the much softer target of Tiefhohl is worth the extra distance.

Industry & Trade

The primary industries of Tishthidh are farming and ranching. A few craftsmen have moved to the settlement, but not enough yet to eliminate the need for imports. So far nothing approaching an industry has arisen, though Ardu is watching for something he can subsidize. Right now trade is only upriver with Cektoh or, more often, downriver to Orthatebh. Aldus has approached Cynesige of Ethfamen about establishing a route for overland trade, but as Tiefhohl has little to trade yet neither ruler has made it a priority.

Infrastructure

Tishthidh is a young settlement so it doesn’t have much in the way of infrastructure. The roads are mostly dirt with only a handful being cobbled. There are no sewers, so waste is thrown into the streets, and when the spring storms come the settlement floods and the roads become quagmires. However, Aldus s working hard to change all that. He is in negotiations with several dwarven clans to build proper paved roads and a functional sewer system, as well as a stone wall to replace the earthworks that currently, and only partly surround the town.

Assets

Tishthidh’s primary asset is the fertile soil along the Rozux River. This allows the community to produce plenty of food. The Rozux river itself supplies water and transportation. Since the nearest source of timber is Sarhólgahnúm and the elves are unwilling to support large scale harvesting of trees, timber is hard to come by. Consequently, Aldus has declared several acres of land to be property of the crown where he has planted groves of pine trees, that will eventually grow into suitable wood for housing. He is also looking into a nearby area that can serve as a quarry for stone.

Guilds and Factions

Tishthidh is too small and too young to have any guilds as of yet. Also there are no factions worth mentioning in the town.

History

Ten years ago, the area that would become Tishthidh was nothing more than a collection of fishermen and shepherd’s huts. That is when Aldus arrived with several score settlers and a plan. Construction began in earnest and within a year several timber frame buildings were raised and a town square was paved with river stones. In the decade since Aldus has built more public works, to attract settlers, including a mill, a proper port, and a dozen others. Including several warehouses to store products produced to ship downstream. While there has been a trickle of immigration it’s been slow in growing, as Aldus hasn’t worried about attracting settlers. He has recruited a handful of craftsmen, mainly smiths, carpenters, and masons, to continue to build up the town.

Architecture

Despite having been in existence for ten years the majority of structures in Tishthidh are wattle and daub buildings, often with timber frames. There are a handful of structures built of stone with timber frames. Buildings are usually one or two stories, with most farm homes being only one story with a loft under the eaves, and shops two stories with the shop on the ground floor and living quarters on the top. Roofs are generally thatched and sloping to better shed rain and snow. While the area produces suitable clay for bricks and tiles, most of it is currently going to bricks to shore up the defensive walls Aldus is trying to build. The walls, and towers are currently earthworks faced with brick.

Geography

Tishthidh is located in the fertile river plain of the Rozux river. The land is mostly flat with little variation in elevation.

Natural Resources

The land around Tishthidh is exceptionally fertile as is all the lands in the Frontier lands. This makes for good crops and well-kept herds. The River bottom clay is proving good for making bricks, and Aldus is directing the harvesting of the clay to produce a deep harbor for boats going up and down stream. Aldus aware of the shortage of timber has planted several acres of pine trees and oak trees. While the trees will take years to mature, they’ll provide plenty of timber once they do. Of course the Rozux river provides fresh water, fish and easy transportation to the coast.
