Knights of the Chalice
One of the youngest of knightly orders the Knights of the Chalice exist to guard travelers making their way into the Frontier lands.
Structure
Modeled somewhat after the much older Knights of the Rose, the Knights of the Chalice are headed by their Knight Commander, beneath him are the generals. Each general oversees a group of castles. Each castle is headed by a Captain, who in turn is aided by one (or in rare cases more) Lieutenants. Below the Lieutenants are the sergeants who each heads a squad of knights and acquires. When a member is first inducted into the order, he serves as a acquire to a more experienced knight who teaches him the finer points of being a Knight of the Chalice. After the squire meets the standards for promotion to a knight which must include at least one trip escorting immigrants he may be promoted to full knight if his sergeant and captain approves. Sergeants are appointed by captains, as are lieutenants who must have the approval of a general. Captains are appointed by generals from the ranks of lieutenants recommended by captains. Generals are chosen from the ranks of captains, subject to the approval of the council of generals. The Knight Commander picks his own successor subject to the approval of the council of generals. Each Knight Commander serves for a term of five years, may not serve more then thrice, and cannot pick his immediate predecessor as his successor.
Public Agenda
The Knights of the Chalice serve to protect the people immigrating to the Frontier lands. To that end squads of knights provide escorts to caravans of people traveling to points in the Frontier lands. They also provide escorts to shipments of goods and people leaving the Frontier lands.
Assets
Since each knight must give half of his personal wealth to the order upon induction and tithe a tenth of all treasure earned in their adventures, the order on the surface might seem to possess considerable wealth. However, since they don’t charge immigrants for escort services and maintain several castles throughout the Frontier lands, as well as four training posts, their outflow of cash is quite heavy. They do own several castles ranging from wooden stockades to elaborate stone affairs throughout the Frontier lands, most on established routes of travel. They also have training posts in Etef, Orthatebh, Nutuc, and Fexlil, and are negotiating to establish new ones in Nem and Anfang.
History
Established almost a century and a half ago, the Knights of the Chalice were formed when a band of knights of the rose saw a need to protect the immigrants to the Frontier lands. Initially serving as a branch of the Knights of the Rose, they eventually split off to establish their own order. They have grown by leaps and bounds and are very popular with the people of the Frontier lands who support them and their mission.
