Bishara

Capital of the elven nation of Tatidär, Bishara is a small city hidden within the bounds of the forest kingdom. Like most elven cities it is built with an eye towards preserving and harmonizing with nature. The towering spires of its buildings blend with the tops of the trees a prime example of elven architecture.

Demographics

Elves - 16,884, Gnomes – 352, Others - 352

Government

Bishara is run by a council of elders elected by the population from amongst the eldest elves in the community. The council is elected every ten years, by popular vote. However, the council has little real power, acting as more of an advisory capacity then a rulership one. Citizens bring their issues to the council who offers advice on ways to resolve it. Vey occasionally the council pass down edicts akin to new laws. However these laws aren’t enforced instead the population is expected to voluntarily comply with them, and does for the most part.

Defences

The community is defended primarily by the fact that it’s style of construction blends the buildings into the larger forest. Unless an individual knows where the community is they could blunder into it without realizing it was there until they’re in it. Secondly the palace is large enough to house the population, though not necessarily in comfort. Thirdly all elves receive basic weapons training, and the community houses a large arsenal of weapons.

Industry & Trade

All eves have a trade, some are craftsmen making crafts and the such which they trade for necessities. Some elves are farmers who coax the land into supplying the food the elves need to live. Bisharans trade amongst themselves and with traders who carry the wares to other communities within Tatidär and beyond and bringing back items from these locations to Bishara. Bishara has no major industries with its citizens dabbling in whatever crafts they feel.

Infrastructure

The buildings of Bishara are grown as much as constructed with the growth of the trees being carefully guided and accented with bits of stone and metal to construct rooms and houses. The center of Bishara is the palace grown in the style known as Green Labyrinth where the palace is a tremendous labyrinth grown out of the forest. In addition to assorted rooms being “built” into the maze along with snares, brambles, and similar natural hazards.

Assets

The palace in Bishara holds great stores of treasure in the form of crafts and the like offered as tribute to the regent. These items are stored and displayed throughout the palace. In addition Bishara houses one of the largest arsenals in Tatidär, hundreds of swords and ravenwood bows along with thousands of arrows and enough armor to outfit the majority of the inhabitants.

History

Bishara was founded in 620 when Hayyel Aysannlara led a band of elven settlers into the heart of the forest that would become Tatidär. Finding a small clearing in the center of the forest Hayyel and her settlers began “constructing” their dwellings by coaxing the trees and plants to grow in the desired shapes. The houses took decades to become useful and some are still under construction.

While growing their houses they also began tending the forest planting fruit bearing plants and guiding the existing ones to produce more. The elves don’t clear land, rather they work within the existing structure of the forest planting in existing clearings and coaching the plants to grow in the most efficient manner. They also constructed roads in the elven style, which is to say winding paths that showcase the natural beauty of the land. Within a few decades the site of Bishara resembled a garden park that wasn’t immediately apparent as a community.

At the same time that they were growing Bishara, the elves were clearing the forest of Tatidär of evil creatures. Like much of the Frontier Lands Tatidär was home to many evil humanoids such as tribes of goblins and kobolds. The former were forced out of the forest entirely, though a few kobold warrens still exist in the nation. The elves after all are very patient. The biggest challenge was dealing with Claughaurak a green dragon that considered the whole of the forest to be his domain. He attacked the fledgling community several times until Hayyel and a band of volunteers tracked him to his lair and slew him. Claughaurak’s horde went to the building of the nation.

The war of 678 nearly destroyed the young community. Surrounded by a horde of orcs and fire giants the elves faced the prospect of being burned out. That is until the druid Sirion summoned a great thunderstorm which not only made burning the forest impossible but gave the beleaguered elves a chance to break the siege of their forest citadel. The elves began reclaiming their forest home from Bishara and the forest is mostly cleared though a few bands of orcs still wander the wilder areas.

Since the war of 678 Bishara has largely been peaceful. The few orc bands have avoided Bishara as the elves have been vigilant and dealt forcefully with the few remnants of the war. In the years since the elves have focused on growing their community, as well as expanding the borders of their kingdom.

Architecture

Elves don’t build so much as grow with stone used as an accent not as a construction medium. Each building is a unique work of art, with no established style. The elves favor open spaces with leafy canopies acting as the roofs and winding ramps leading from one level to another. Because of their effort to grow their buildings in harmony with nature, they’re difficult to spot from a distance, many non-elf races blundering into them without realizing it.

Geography

The land Bishara occupies is a region of gently rolling hills covered by forest. After a century of work by the elves the region is very much a beautiful garden-like area filled with flowering plants as well as fruit bearing ones. The community is cut through with winding paths that highlight the many scenic spots in the community.

Natural Resources

The resources of Bishara consist mostly of those things that can be grown from plants. So fruit in abundance is found in Bishara, as are flax and hemp, which make up the bulk of the clothing worn by elves. They also produce silk through a process that is a closely guarded secret of the Tatidärian elves. They also produce lumber though in a very limited amount as the elves do not believe in clear cutting as other races such as humans do. Instead certain trees are grown to be harvested very selectively.
