The Feathered Serpent
The legend of the Feathered Serpent is a tale passed down through the ages. Though the tale varies from teller to teller, all agree that the feathered serpent is a sight to behold. With gleaming scales and brilliantly coloured feathers in a mane around its face.
They say if you hear its voice it's too late to run. Others say you should leave an offering and pray it's accepted.
Summary
The Feathered Serpent is viewed as a benevolent god. Who once roamed the land freely but hasn't been seen in a millennia. It is worshipped and revered - people petition the priests to seek it's blessing particularly when sailing as it is thought to control the wind.
Historical Basis
The Ormälskare Sanctum has many carved images of a feathered serpent. And the catacombs underneath also have images that represent this being also. They could just be the artists imagination but they match, despite the temple supposedly being built before the catacombs were discovered. It is possible that the serpent did exist.
Variations & Mutation
Some say it is good luck to see the serpent, others say it is to see your life flash before your eyes.
Stories are told about the Feathered Serpent scooping up children who leave their bed in the night and taking them to their lair in the clouds. Other stories say the serpent leaves goodies for the children on the windowsill for their birthday. Often there will be some sweets and a toy with a coloured feather tucked underneath one.
Cultural Reception
The people of Ellon all worship this serpent. But elsewhere in The Theocracy of Formene people pay little mind. And those in the Aswarian Empire are unlikely to even have heard of the serpent.
In Literature
There is a children's rhyme about the serpent.
Feathers bright
Shine tonight
Protect my children
From the night
Winds blow
The Serpent knows
Upon the good
Gifts will bestow
In Art
The Ormälskare Sanctum is filled with carvings, statues and tapestries with depictions of the serpent.
Date of First Recording
One of the oldest extant documents was excavated from the buried city of Ernesh
