Kiriel Irdome

Harbinger of terrors past through the mask of placidity.

High Priestess of Alvoch Kiriel Xarena Irdome

High Priestess Kiriel Xarena Irdome, oftentimes called The Priestess of No Gods, The Lone Believer or simply Kiriel Irdome, is a warlock-priestess that follows the teachings and commands of Alvoch the Awoken, an ancient being responsible for the destruction of the world of Arc - Tus' population. Though she is not His only follower, she is certainly one of the most powerful and active members of the ascended's warped faith.

At a glance, Kiriel Irdome appears to be a simple-minded zealot trying to save a dying religion from an abandoned church. In reality, she's responsible for several crimes, plots and atrocities that have been committed over the past few years in order to pave the way for Alvoch's return to the world.

A native to the city of Starpath, she and her sister were both exiled by Veilbearer Undómenel the Insightful in an unjust trial. Astral amnesia was inflicted upon them so they would not remember the city, its beliefs or its location.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Kiriel Irdome can be easily described as a lithe, physically weak and highly resilient female aasimar with a plain body and an attractive face. Her skin is mostly unblemished, with the exception of the 'x' shape scar above her sternum that most people ignore. In the depth of her eyes, one can catch glimpses of the remains of the astral amnesia that afflicted her as much as it did her sister.

Body Features

Kiriel's body is mostly plain, drawing no unwanted eyes where they don't belong. Her most distinctive features are the silver-blue, tattoo-like markings on her arms, which provide proof of her heavenly bloodline.

Above her sternum is an 'x' shaped scar caused by her submission to Alvoch's service, with the wound never being able to properly heal.

Facial Features

Kiriel's face has oftentimes been described as attractive by curious visitors to her church, citing a rounded chin preceded by a defined jawline lying underneath prominent cheekbones and a straight nose and above a thin, always curved set of lips. Her slightly large eyes are what tends to captivate people, resembling two round pieces of amber flecked with tiny rubies which glow softly, although sometimes betraying the trauma the astral amnesia caused her.

Identifying Characteristics

Kiriel is most easily identifiable by her eyes and her unusual garb, which was one of the only possessions she was allowed to keep after she was exiled from Starpath. She can also be recognized by her thin appearance and small hands.

Physical quirks

A handful of people know that Kiriel is left-handed, meaning that most of the tools she works with have to be adapted to her grip.

Special abilities

Show spoiler
As a subject of Alvoch, Kiriel can manipulate magic with greater ease than any other mortal normally would, being able to cast powerful spells with little to no fatigue afterwards. This potency is increased when the spells in question are cast in a ritual or if the intention of the spell is to cause something or someone to disappear from existence.

Because of her falling out with her guiding angel, her connection to Alvoch and her bloodline, Kiriel can enhance her destructive capabilities by unleashing the powers conferred to her by her ancestry for a limited amount of time, making the people around her cower in fear at the sight of her as she decimates foe and structure alike.

Apparel & Accessories

Kiriel wears clothing typical of Eastern Starpath: flowing, short-sleeved white robes with accents of purple and gold that leave the user's back exposed. She covers her back with an opaque silken shawl that can most accurately be described as being the color of the sky just before twilight ends. She decorates her ears with small amethyst earrings and usually dons a simple, short-chained silver amulet with a moonstone set in its center.

When performing her rites, or needing to cast her spells, Kiriel uses a staff made of light metals and topped with incomplete, concentric circles that slowly spin around.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Little is known of Kiriel Irdome's early years, as she has always been quite reluctant to share what happened through them. It is known, however, that she was born in Eastern Starpath as the eldest of two siblings. Her father would die under unknown circumstances not overtly long after her sister Ebelle came into the world. The man's untimely death caused their mother to spiral into a violent, drunken spiral, wherein she would beat her eldest daughter and verbally abuse her. Kiriel put up with it so young Ebelle need not endure it.

It is known, however, that it was during her time as a child that Kiriel began having issues with her emotional expression. She could feel them all, only began having trouble expressing them and, later on, feeling them altogether. Her frustration against her mother and her love for her sister would slowly be eroded by this seemingly inexorable force that was taking hold of her being.

An unspecified amount of time later, it was revealed that both siblings were aasimar. A member of the Selenine, Starpath's religious authority, took them away from their abusive homestead to live in the monastery's silver halls. Here, both Kiriel and her younger sister would learn the ways of the arcane and the knowledge of the world above and underneath them while serving as loyal acolytes to the newly instated Veilbearer, eventually being consecrated as priestesses. Their easy way of explaining the higher mysteries of the planes made them popular among the citizens, who would eagerly listen to them as they spoke.

With this new title came greater responsibilities, but also a greater amount of freedom within the monastery's libraries. It was there, during one of Kiriel's self-study sessions, that she stumbled upon a hidden trove of ancient documents that spoke about the real reason as to why Starpath was founded. Confused, she read all the manuscripts as quickly as she could, finding that the world below Starpath had been destroyed multiple times over the course of millennia by a powerful entity known as Alvoch the Awaken. Further investigation revealed the he was a solar, a mighty angel supposedly in the service of the gods.

Not knowing how to make sense of any of this, a distraught Kiriel Irdome talked about it to her sister, who immediately demanded for these documents' whereabouts. Though she pleaded for caution and prudence as her younger sibling read them, Ebelle told her that this could not be kept under hidden from the city, starting a movement to draw the Veilbearer's attention. Kiriel, not knowing what to do, began considering how they could fade away if things started to go awry, toying with the idea of leaving her sister behind and stepping away from the city. However, Ebelle dragged her around while speaking about the uncovered truth, inciting the masses to protest before revealing this newly found information. None of them would prepare her for the events to come.

In a sense, Ebelle was successful in getting Undómenel the Insightful's attention. What neither of them expecting was the fact that they were arrested, tried and sentenced to permanent exile in the span of an hour. No argument said reached the Veilbearer's ears, no pleas swayed the hands that forced the Shadowdream tea down their throats. In the moment before their memories were taken from them, however, Kiriel lashed out for the first time in her life, the fury that had been contained for so many years finally breaking loose. In the span of time Undómenel took to cast her spell, Kiriel vowed she would destroy her sister so utterly that she would beg for the mercy her elder had asked of their mother when they where children.

And thus, they fell separated.
Show spoiler
Unbeknownst to Kiriel, however, she had managed to gain the attention of Alvoch. And when she fell, He began appearing to her in dreams and visions, slowly revealing who He was and what His designs were, giving the elder Irdome her memories back bit by bit. Eventually, she was able to use these visions, the partially restored memories and a potion of loaned power to break free from the astral amnesia's shackles. Then and there, she pledged that she would find the way to serve Him and His goals.

How this was achieved is not entirely clear. How and when she arrived at the capital city of the Kingdom of Crendameth is not well understood, either. What is known, however, is that Kiriel Irdome was now more powerful than she could have ever been, having sealed the pact with this ancient ascended being. Her powers only promise to grow even further still. Her oath still stands, even if the emotional ties that bound it to fate itself have become frayed.
And Ebelle Irdome has arrived in Solaris.

Education

Kiriel and her sister Ebelle were largely educated by their father before his untimely death, teaching his daughter their letters and the basic principles of magic. After the Selenine took them in, they greatly expanded the frontiers of their knowledge while under the tutelage of the scholars, priests and other acolytes found within the monastery's many halls. However, it was both siblings who took the initiative to better themselves and to further augment their powers.

Show spoiler
Alvoch was the one responsible for taking her accumulated knowledge to the highest possible level, granting her the wish to know everything she ignored or did not know existed, how everything worked and the history of the world before the one she currently walked on.

Employment

Both of the Irdome sisters were initially employed within their family's small plot of land, with their mother hiding their heritage from the Selenine. When they were discovered and proven as aasimar, they were taken from their home and to Central Starpath, where they were responsible for various duties as acolytes for the religious order while they developed and increased their magical prowess.

Show spoiler
After their exile, however, Kiriel has been 'working' as a priestess of Alvoch in the church with no name. While this does not earn her any money, it does ensure that all plans can be mapped out and met in a timely fashion.

Failures & Embarrassments

  • Kiriel's exile from Starpath is still her lowest moment, and was caused by her not being able to put a stop on her sister before she started talking about the texts the elder Irdome had found to anyone within earshot. Being cast out of Starpath would prove to be a minor setback, yet Kiriel was defeated in principle. Her sister had taken everything away from her, and she did little to stop her as she did.

Mental Trauma

Kiriel's greatest mental scars come from her childhood, wherein she was beaten and berated by her drunkard of a mother while also suffocating within her younger sister's shadow. Not being able to do anything right, not being able to be considered for possible Enveliment, not being able to apply her knowledge fast enough. She never allowed her mother to so much as touch Ebelle, however. To this day, she is not entirely certain as to why that was.

If their mother had been alive in the weeks preceding their exile, however, Kiriel would have gladly allowed her sister to be beaten to a bloody pulp. After so long attempting to step outside of her sister's achievements, she had finally managed to do something that her sibling could not, which was immediately ruined by the younger aasimar's brashness. This, in conjunction with her already deteriorating mental stability and the sentence that was handed down declaring their exile, made her scream an oath in a previously unheard fury, one that bound them to meet once more, wherein one would destroy the other.

Intellectual Characteristics

Kiriel is fiercely intelligent and capable to process large amounts of information in short amounts of time, yet chooses to appear otherwise until the need arises, posing as a simple-minded, zeal-infused priestess that knows about the world, its religions and not much else. When her knowledge about certain topics is question or rebutted, however, she displays a shift into arrogance, choosing to subtlety ridicule whoever challenged her while also presenting the truth of the matter.

Morality & Philosophy

At her core, Kiriel believes that those who would choose a life of meek servitude in the hopes of a just destiny instead of embracing their inherent ambition for more of what they work towards are weak-willed and of lesser minds. Though society exists as a means to help each other up the steps that some cannot climb, true power resides in the will to climb without any helping hands and the willingness to use someone else to further their own goals.

Because of her inability to empathize and understand some of the subtleties of the enjoyments that come with living, she considers death to be nothing more than life's logical conclusion, finding little reason to mourn those who have ceased their biological functions.
Show spoiler
This proved to be a great boon when she learned of Alvoch's teachings, as the notions of genocide did not phase her whatsoever. In spite of this, she feels the need to defend the knowledge acquired through Alvoch's boon, as she views people who attempt to disprove it as an offense to her Lord.

To Kiriel, there are few things that would serve as a reason to cease an ambition's pursuit, the chief one being the prudence and subtlety needed to carry out Alvoch's will without the public at large knowing of His existence.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Show spoiler
The High Priestess is mostly motivated by the word of Alvoch the Awoken and his message for the annihilation of all living things as a means to ascend to godhood. To this end, she has painstakingly been eliminating groups of smaller faiths and religions while also preparing for her master's return to the world by offering constant sacrifices to Him. When He arrives, the world will shatter, and only those who follow in His example can attempt to remain whole.

A deeper drive lies in her intense distaste for living things, especially those who enjoy life and its gifts. Because of her difficulty to feel emotions, seeing people be grateful for their time in the world can only fill her with a dull longing to experience that which they have and she cannot.

Deeper still lies the resentment she has towards her sister for being such a hot-headed idiot. She was always overshadowed by her, even though Ebelle was younger. The fact that she was the one to take the brunt of her dunk mother's beatings and verbal abuse eventually led to a profound anger towards her younger sibling. When she finally had the means to do something Ebelle could not, she stole the papers and forced Kiriel to come along in her crusade, eventually leading to both of their exiles.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Above all else, Kiriel Irdome greatly excels in the understanding of spells and spellcasting, showing a nearly prodigious mastery over the arcane in theory and in practice. A talented caster herself, Kiriel often uses her magic in unconventional ways, throwing her opponents off and making them reconsider their tactics before proceeding.

[spoier] Her connection to Alvoch also grants her vast amounts of knowledge, which she internalized surprisingly quickly considering the sheer amount of understanding that was given to her in a very short amount of time. Through this information acquired and processed, she holds invaluable historical records within her mind, making her a master of all lore. [/spoiler]

Though she will never admit it outright, Kiriel is an excellent investigator and an even better interrogator, knowing exactly when and where to push to obtain whatever information a person is hiding. Oftentimes, however, she is wont to circumvent these more traditional methods and opts to use spells to look into a person's mind.

Nonetheless, her shortcomings start appearing when the focus shifts from her intellectual capabilities to her physical ones. Although she knows how to use weapons, she is utterly deficient in their brandishing and thus depends almost entirely on her available magic to defend herself. This extends towards warfare in general. Although she has a solid grasp on what makes up the bulk of battlefield tactics, she's yet to learn how to implement them correctly.

She also lacks most empathy towards others, choosing to appear concerned yet not being able to fully care about the other person's problems enough to fully offer a helping hand.

Virtues & Personality perks

Show spoiler
Kiriel's greatest strength lies in her connection to Alvoch, which grants her an almost limitless amounts of knowledge. She has no qualms about sharing this knowledge with others, provided it does not reveal any of her or her master's intentions or the world's real history. Through this, she can plan her actions carefully and with much forethought, which partly explains why her demeanor is usually so cold.

Because of this and the fact that serving Alvoch is never a quick enterprise, she has can arm herself with a great deal of patience to allow things to happen. Rarely does she lose her temper when something goes amiss, instead looking for ways to turn the situation in her favor.

Vices & Personality flaws

Her unwillingness to see past her worldview, however broad this may be given her circumstances, oftentimes makes her cruel and uncaring. This is evidenced by her lack of action towards the enforcement of justice both within the city and without, and furthered still by the apparent apathy she displays towards pleas and other's plights.

Underneath her calm visage lie years of resentment and anger that have been built up, only for her to tear them down and start the process anew. Seeing as she has a solid grasp on her emotions, Kiriel never allows these frustrations to surface, yet at times, glimpses of her destructive nature can be seen through her discourse or a brief losses of control where her lack of balance is plain to see.

Show spoiler
Because of all the knowledge imparted by Alvoch, she believes that there is little to nothing left to learn in the world, scowling (in her own, odd way) at the notion of further study.

Personality Quirks

She doesn't appear to be able to have anything than a placid expression on her face, which is a front. She can feel the entire range of mortal emotion though having a hard time expressing them. As such, when these become very intensely felt, she's prone to make odd, almost exaggerated faces.

She says Rejoice! The time for change draws nigh as a crutch sentence after (supposedly) talking about her beliefs.

Although imperceptible, her hands shake at the thought of her sister.

Hygiene

Kiriel does not fuss much about hygiene, keeping herself as clean as she needs to be to go about her day. Her rituals are performed as she is, not as she makes herself to be.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Because of her position within Solaris, Kiriel receives regular visits from Anascelle Sovelias, the city's current Head of Faith, and her cohorts.

She also maintains a close relationship with the Glassblowing Associates of the Bazaar of the Sun, often being cited as an honorary member.

Show spoiler
Her most important affiliation is to Alvoch, her god and patron. He is the source of her powers, her faith and zeal.

Family Ties

Her only living family is her sister Ebelle, who has forgotten her. The rest of her family's whereabouts is unknown.

Religious Views

Show spoiler
Kiriel's true religious views are kept hidden from the public, choosing only to show the image of the pious believer who follows a god on the verge of being forgotten. However, her real beliefs are extremely zealous, to the point of wanting to eliminate other religious organizations in order to divert most prayers to her Lord Alvoch.

Because Kiriel doesn't just believe in what Alvoch preaches, she lives it, reveling in the idea that, through extinction and a mass cleansing of the world, mortals can ascend to great power, much like she already has. Even if she considers life amusing or even beautiful at times, her worldview is so warped by her god's end goals that she sees these as simple distractions that she's allowed to enjoy before the world's curtain falls. This allows for a surprising amount of liberties, as none of the pleasures of the flesh are disallowed according to this mindset. As such, she can only chastise people for making incorrect choices when regarding the obtainment of power and other such mistakes.

Social Aptitude

Although introverted, Kiriel is very charismatic, knowing how to sway people with words alone. She's highly confident in her abilities and knowledge, to the point of it being a flaw. Her ego tends to shine through her calm exterior when questioned.

Even though she can handle most conversations without paying them much thought, her formal etiquette is, as one would say, rough around the edges. Because she doesn't attend too many events where it is required, Kiriel prefers to remain courteous in plain conversation rather than go out of her way to make the other party feel any better or worse than they should.

Mannerisms

Kiriel tends to speak with her arms locked behind her back, releasing their embrace as the conversation progresses. Once this happen, she will oftentimes spread them wide, leaving her palms up.

The High Priestess also tends to talk in an almost emotionless tone of voice, with her face betraying no thoughts and her pitch less so.

Unless she's making glass, she's usually quiet, almost never speaking without being spoken to first.

Hobbies & Pets

The High Priestess dislikes animals, preferring to keep them at arm's length or greater.

She does, however, tend to a small garden of potted plants within her apartments. Said plants are varieties from the Kingdom and its reaches, including a rare moon's tear in her collection. Although she possesses a great disdain for most living creatures, plants have naught to do with her ongoing crusade.

Never having a real interest for music, writing or sculpting, Kiriel Irdome is greatly entertained by glass making, with her putting together most of the church's stained glass panels. If one were to look for her anywhere, they would find her in the church or at the glassblower's forge.

Speech

Kiriel speaks in a slow, deep, almost monotone voice, using archaic or out-of-use words to convey her points as precisely as she can while maintaining a relaxed demeanor about her. Living among the surface fodder for four years has given her a great grasp of how they speak, shedding her Eastern Starpath accent entirely.

To hear Kiriel Irdome curse is to catch a glimpse into a past long gone, where insults had a different weight to them. Nowadays, people just find them silly.

Wealth & Financial state

Although in a position of great magical power, Kiriel Irdome has none of the wealth she enjoyed while living in Starpath. Not that she needs it, anyway. Her life as a priestess for a religion that seems not to exist allows her to live comfortably with little expense.

Her income, if it can be called that, comes from taking a portion of a stained glass' selling price, and is almost exclusively to pay for basic needs, such as food. However, she always stores a part of these paltry sums as a means to ensure that no expense is left around for long.

Under Crendamite law, the Church is registered to her name and is technically her property. Becuase it's a religious building, she need only pay the housing tax, which is considerably lower than what would someone maintaining such a structure would pay otherwise.

Quotes & Catchphrases
The most often-repeated phrase said by Kiriel Irdome is Rejoice! The time for change draws nigh, which would normally appear to be a passage from the teachings of her religion. The reality of the matter is that it is an omen, one that spreads the coming of Alvoch without fear of being discovered.

Starpath's customary farewell is also commonly heard from her, albeit with an ominous twist. Instead of saying May your day be bountiful and your night full of stars, she says May your days need not counting and your nights never lack.

She knows the structure of all languages thanks to Alvoch's boon of knowledge. However, this does not imply she understands them perfectly.
