Kingdom of The Three Cities

Each of the three cities were originally outposts with commanders, later dukes. After the collapse of the empire and the chaos that followed, they managed to eke out kingdoms and over the centuries eventually united into one kingdom.   The thousand year period following the final fall of the Dulmar Empire when the Throne of the Iron Rose lay vacant, dukes did all in their power to maintain order and protect those in their charge. After the collapse of the empire and the chaos that followed, they managed to eke out kingdoms and over the centuries eventually united into one kingdom.   In the time of chaos the Three Cities grew from being Duchies of the Empire, to three kingdoms, occasionally at war, but mostly committed to restoring order. The Kingdom of the Two Cities was founded when the main line of the Kingdom of Pirem, in the east, ended and the King of the central city, Aralon, inherited the throne. This greatly increased the power and stability of this land between the deltas, but the rulers of Girlon feared this power. The kings of Girlon feared their possible loss of power to the Kingdom of the Two Cities, and so cultivated in the dynastic family a fear of a loss of power so great, that they would ally themselves with orcs to the north in an attempt to keep that power.   Slowly the Three Cities pushed back the chaos around them, and the human survivors of the Dulmar Empire were able to begin to thrive.   However, in a final battle, the power of the orcs and human army of the Kingdom of Girlon was broken and through conquest the Kingdom of the Three Cities was formed. To the populace, this was a good thing, as the orcs would be banished, and peace and prosperity would return. But for the dynasty of the former kings of Girlon, were now reduced to their ancient titles as Dukes of Girlon. While retaining much of the control over their hereditary domain, they were no longer kings. They resist efforts to intermarry with the daughters of the Kings, and they continue to have sons to carry the dynastic pretenses to a return to kingly rule.
