Ottokath's Journal #9

General Summary

We were given our first assignment. One that looked all to familiar. Discs were handed to us with recognizable runes. Bombs, we reasoned. With a task to disperse them around Northpoint. I am an elf of principle. There are things I will not do, even to preserve myself, or those I care for. Planting bombs among civilians, those without guilt or means of defense. I refused. A mistake I would make again.   My companions were not so principled. Three planted the devices. I could tell Art was reluctant for this task as well and they did not force us per se. Me least of all. And, to my relief, they weren't explosives. Merely listening devices. This would prove problematic.   The second task was to ambush a caravan. For this we had a better plan. No casualties would be needed, for we had a copy of an official seal, courtesy of Mavis. As such, we convinced the soldiers with the cart to move on without out. Leave it in our care. I classified it as a mission success. Malik didn't agree.     On return to the camp, I was called to the camp. This is when I made a mistake. I gave my coin of roc summoning to Mavis. Dragged before Malik, we had a talk. He understood my reluctance. Thought he could tempt me with motives he failed to understand. I regret what happened to my people. I dislike the Tellurians for what they did to them. But I may well be as guilty as they are. I have no right to protect them. To save them. Malik did not understand this. He proposed the freedom of my family, in return for service. But I am smarter than I look. And family isn't so easily defined. And unfortunately for me Malik was currently in control of two of them. One I had failed to save. Had no right to save. But responsibility for the other still lay with me. So I smiled and agreed.   That is when everything went very poorly. A roc, the biggest creature I have ever seen, slammed into the front of the tent, shacking the magical space. Mavis landed in the tent. Realizing what happened I yelled at them to run, manifesting my power near them, granting them the endurance of a bear. I was resolved to die then. To give my life for my new family. I was content. I took the form of a horse, freeing my arms and kicked at my aggressors. They in turn tore into me with their weapons, breaking my form. Malik summoned a giant spectral creature, which rushed me. I am faster than I look and dodged the incantation. I was ready to die. And that readiness tore with the wall of the tent, Mutt's axe revealing to me the glorious light of day. I could live.   A minute later I found myself carried aloft in the claws of the roc.
