Ottokath's Journal #3
General Summary
The decision was made to leave the sorcerer and the fighter human to their own devices. It was for the best really. I don't think I could ever truly trust my back to them.
In discussion with the captain of the guard we started to form a plan. What we needed was the element of surprise and enough fighting strength to beat the Venatorii. Not an easy task, but one I was more than willing to perform. For this to work, the task had to be completed. We saw no other way. But for the manpower, we needed authority. More authority than the guard captain could provide. As such we took our request to the mayor, the poorest excuse for a human official I have yet to come across.
We met him in the tavern we were destined to doom. There we tried to convince him of our plan. The spineless coward failed to see what action he could take, should take or even cared to take. This got me angry. Here was an opportunity to strike a blow to the empire's elite and he refused to take it. Luckily for us, his cowardice extended to us. Raising my voice almost scared him out of his chair. Needless to say, we left the room with a written letter for the baron, requesting reinforcements. We bought a horse on a whim and the universe conspired the have us use it.
It was a three hour rush to make it to the Granite Tower. On the way I spotted a minotaur accompanied by a specter. As they paid me no heed, I sped by. It was shortly after midnight when I arrived at the base of the granite tower. As such my reception left to be desired. It took nearly ten minutes for a servant to welcome me at the door. After pressing the urgency of my visit I was finally let inside and had to spend another lengthy period of time waiting for the duke to get ready.
When we finally got to the point, I explained the situation in detail, using the letter of the mayor to strengthen my case. Eventually, the duke ceded and agreed to lend me ten men of his garrison. Finding this number too low for an opportunity this rare, I stressed needing more. Noticing his set of Dragon's chess, I challenged him to a game, betting the quantity of men on the outcome. To this he laughed and agreed. It was a close match, but, in my favour, he barely pulled out ahead. Having been impressed by my skill at the game, he agreed the add one of his officers join the unit and not to reduce the original number he stated. Politics is a tricky game, but I do have a mild awareness how to get humans to help me. Beating them at Dragon's chess is not that way.
Being granted a letter stating the orders for Baker's unit, I proceeded to the camp at the base of the tower. Here I spend the night in front of the appropriate tent, meditating on the day ahead.
