Ottokath's Journal #19

General Summary

I needed time. Alone. Being left with Art, a halfelf I barely trusted, and Hamood, the only human I was currently convinced wasn't out to make my life more miserable. At least with the death of Buddy, my connection with Feyret seemed to have fractured, but that was a victory that felt naught but sour. I told the others I would scout ahead. They let me.   There was nothing calming about being among these tree spirits, Kodamas. They flittered about erratically, excitedly, yet lethargically. They were growing uninhibited, but penned in, like too many chickens stacked on top of one another. The earth spirits, gaia, were crude and fractured, a forgotten soil on a jungle floor. The sylphs were quiet. But I was one with it nonetheless, jumping free branch to branch like once in a forgotten time. Few would have seen me pass. That was until I came upon a group of, of course, humans. They bore strange blowdart launchers and darts that dripped with natural poison. I outstayed my welcome then. Too convinced of the advantage of my cover. When they turned to fire, I made to flee, only to be bit in the back. Consciousness left me quickly. My last thought were of the recklessness and shortsightedness of my decision. I laughed as the world spun and went black.   I woke up bound. After making some noise, I was check on and brought before their chief. To my relief, he was at least civil enough to speak common. I explained who I was and where I came from and quickly found the conversation turn to the problems he faced. Spirits he called them. I assessed these to probably be fey in nature and, as some of the only creatures I get along with are fey, I agreed to help diminish this problem by playing an intermediary. I quickly realised the chief was like any human, selfish and greedy. These fey weren't going to leave by my asking. They would need some reason, a gift or otherwise, to persuade them. Along with me he send his son, an odd human by the name of Tanz, who seems to favour undead over the living in an odd caring way and he fetched my companions from the beach. I can't imagine they were thrilled to be met as they were.   We headed deep into the jungle where we came upon a portal. A direct passage into the feywild. A group of fey was scattered around, idling. They were creatures of shifting and blinding colour, shaped like animals I was familiar with. There was a cat, a bear, a hare and a mouse. I quickly realised there would be no arguing with this group. The hare, mouse and bear were quite easy to deal with, but the cats motives eluded me. The bear was probably the oddest of them. He was appeased simply by eating my old cloak.   We soon returned with little to show for our expedition. That is when Tanz warned me of his father. Not understanding what he meant, I did the sensible thing and fortified our sleeping area, far away from their village, and kept watch. It was not enough. These were locals and little is what one can do when the locals seek to outflank and ambush you. The only one that escaped was Art, aided by the spirits I summoned to hide our presence. The world spun once more and went dark.
