In my travels I have noticed a distinct lack of awareness of the ways of the world. People seem not to know of the spirits, something all I used to know did. As such I have chosen to compile a list of all the spirits and phenomenon I am familiar with, so the knowledge of my people may never be forgotten, even if my people are.
Spirits:
Sylphs: sylphs are whimsical beings of the wind. They appreciate those of lighthearted nature and bless creatures that fly. Great creatures of flight are generally loved by the sylphs, especially dragons. Those not tethered to the world may find themselves more light of foot than they once were. Free spirits are those blessed by the sylphs. Sylphs giggle and whisper on the wind.
Gaia: unyielding spirits of the earth. Their silent whispers fill caves and their singing can be heard even over the oceans, hailing of land. Gaia appreciate creatures certain of purpose, those as unyielding as they are. Endurance blesses those blessed by the gaia. I have met an individual who was particularly blessed by the gaia. Not only would they follow him onto the ocean, but they seemed to literally turn his flesh as hard as stone. The gaia are often slow and lethargic, but can be erratic and dangerous, few envy being within an avalanche.
Undine: calm spirits of water. These spirits can be found from oceans to rivers and even within the rains. Their language comes on in many forms, but most often comes in a chittering excitement or a deafening roar. Undine are spirits of both drink and storm, after all. A traveller at sea should always mind the disposition of the undine, for they may herald their doom. Those blessed by the undine are most unlike those blessed by gaia. They have to be as flexible as a river, clear of certainty. A sailor blessed by the undine is a formidable one indeed.
Salamanders: raging spirits of fire. These spirits are often found around places of natural fire. Obsidian is stone blessed by their touch. Should one come upon salamanders among those of the komada, it is either a sign of tragedy or renewal. If they are encountered without the komada, it is almost always disaster. Villages burned, bear such signs. I have recently found the salamanders among the constructs of man as well. A substance referred to as gunpowder seems to gather their favour. It requires great passion to be favoured among the salamanders. Their favour enflames passion and drives resolve.
Komada: cousins of both the gaia and undine, komada are spirits of trees. They range from slow and lethargic, to calm and yielding. I have once seen the komada restless. This seemed do to their perked in circumstance and limited space. They were fighting over the ground and it troubled them. Those in tune with the komada may find the best trees more easily and detect disease among them swiftly. The komada value their forests and collectively hum a tune among the trees.
Phthisis: spirits of death and undeath. These gather where the dead congregate, regardless of their state of animation. Phthisis are of decay and renewal. I have encountered few of such spirits and when one does, one ought be weary lest they find themselves among the dead.
Yuki: spirits of snow. These were undine once, but weather changed them such that their playful calmth makes way for a rigid coldness. Much like undine, they sing a song of water, but the melody makes way for gentle cracks and cries. They don't lose much of the care undine tend to show travellers, but may manifest it in a less benificial way. Foolish is the traveller that relies on the yuki alone to find his path through the blizzard. Beware their calls, but doubt their claims, lest you find yourself frozen and alone.
