Bureau of Inter-Planetary Law Enforcement
Structure
Headed by the Director, who is appointed by a Council committee and answers to the Council itself. The Deputy Director is the next in command, and the one to take over in the interim if something happens to the Director themselves.
There are multiple people under the Deputy Director who oversee the logistical, financial, and public aspects of the Bureau, and they of course have their own teams and offices to run. There are also Unit Chiefs for each individual specialized unit: the Bureau handles a huge variety of cases, and has units for everything from white collar fraud to terrorism.
The Unit Chiefs oversee specific teams and appoint the leaders there. Heads of teams generally hold the rank of Supervisory Special Agent, though a few have been run by someone a rank lower. The teams themselves consist of various ranks of agents, from the occasional probationary for those right out of the Academy, to Senior Agents who usually have at least fifteen years under their belt.

Public Agenda
Enforce interplanetary laws, assist on cases when invited by local law enforcement, and handle crimes that jump planetary jurisdiction.
History
BIPLE was founded shortly after the first colonies on Iabos were settled, as handling the jurisdiction between three planets was getting too complicated for local law enforcement. Their headquarters was, of course, based on Charuta, with smaller bases set up on the other planets eventually. People started to see the problem with this -- having a supposedly unbiased organization have its headquarters on one specific planet seemed counterintuitive -- so most of the more recent bases are orbiting ones, high enough to officially be out of anyone's jurisdiction.
The Academy is still based on Charuta, but that doesn't look to be changing any time soon.
Their reputation has shifted a lot over the years from planet to planet; most people on Nathos consider them an unwelcome presence, and some of the local law enforcement think they're the "big government" trying to do all the work themselves. Even so, the Bureau does good work most of the time, and usually has been known to own up to its mistakes.
Usually.
