Fogmere

Fogmere is a city ran by the eternal mayor Elvira Nyberg, together with her friends and coworkers. It is one of the many safe havens monster folk can take refuge in, but it is the first and by far the biggest. Its actual "location", before it tore away from this part of reality and into a pocket dimension, rests near the border of Germany and The Netherlands, but its territory comes close to Bad Nieuweschans. Its status as a pocket dimension is actually a relatively new invention and only came into existence around 1670 CE, right around the city's 350th anniversary. Fogmere has several sections. Its layout is vast and a bit disorganized, due to its old age. Most notable are the forest, the town hall paired with its park, the port town, the large university campuses, the portal port, Bramensweg (the street where regular food markets are held) and lastly, the Youkai district, where originally Japanese citizens gather.

Demographics

Fogmere is a refugee city where the poor or endangered come to pick themselves up. That being said, the wealth class distribution... Is unorthodox. Most newcomers, who tend to be rather poor, hole up in the huge apartment buildings, which generally are access-balcony flats. No one stays in them for too long though. Other than that, there is a distribution of species size and other accommodation. Larger sized individuals, for example, require larger homes. Giants, Oni, Cyclops and the like have their own neighborhoods, as do Centaurs and Nagas. Amphibian or otherwise moisture needing species have streams running alongside the sidewalks, as well as special, misty sprinklers.

Government

Fogmere is ruled by what one would describe as a "benevolent dictatorship". The city has only ever known one leader (Elvira Nyberg), though secretaries and advisors are often promoted into the government and can be voted for. New laws and bills are voted for as well. Fogmere has no formal "police" system. Instead, things are kept in order by Reapers, which are either the classic robed skeletons, which act as omnipresent surveillance cameras or the resident dullahans, who usually patrol on horseback. The prisons are small, seeing as how Fogmere focuses on rehabilitation programs, rather than locking up criminals. Banshees are used in, for example, murder cases, seeing as how their screeches and seeing abilities allow them to predict nearby deaths. By law, every banshee is obligated to participate in this investigation process, though if absolutely necessary, the banshee is allowed to cancel their participation.

Defences

Listen lad, the whole town's filled with magic users and monsters, and also it's basically impossible to plan any sort of assault on this joint because there's omnipresent, powerful reapers that can yank the soul right out of your body in a second. They don't really need a military.

Industry & Trade

Fogmere has its own economy as well as currency, namely MOTHCOINS. MTC are exchanged entirely digitally using the owner's phone or mothcard, but physical currency is still exchanged per example as pocket money or at smaller, local shops.   Fogmere is affiliated with most of, if not all, fully established safe havens. Several trading links are established, as well as having haven-exclusive brands and culture exchanges, but trades of main-plane products are usually imported via proxy locations, namely large clusters of warehouses whose contents can be magically shipped off into the ports inside the pocket dimensions.

Infrastructure

Fogmere is, as said earlier, humongous.

Assets

Fogmere is stuffed to the brim with stores, fields, factories and other resources. It's *the* trading center for monster-targeted accommodations, as well as magic ingredients and other enchanted wares.

Guilds and Factions

As previously mentioned, Fogmere is affiliated with most if not all monster havens, as well as a good bunch of pocket dimensions. Most prominently is the Nakanishi Kingdom in Kyoto, but it has an affiliation with Koclusta and the small population living in the Disposal as well, amongst others.

History

Fogmere started out in 1320 as a mere inn, ran by a witch named Janine to secretly house monsters in.

Architecture

Fogmere's architecture is incredibly diverse. Most common is the use of brick and concrete, but there are some marble monumental structures as well. Older buildings, homes or homes that value tradition, generally use generous amounts of wood in their structures. Most important buildings in the center of town are built in a neorenaissance style, made in brick. The town hall meanwhile, is made in the neoclassicist style. Other than that, appartment blocks, throwbacks to Medieval German homes and general row homes are common.

Geography

Mostly a flat land, with hills in the north, stretching from east to west, an ocean port in the northwest and for the rest, it is mostly surrounded by a ring of forest, with only a river stretching out to the southeast, parting the lush woods. for an undetermined distance, up until it disappears into the fog. The river itself takes a bend around the center of the city, emerging about in the southwest of it, then resuming its route into the forest. It has two instances of meandering, but mysteriously goes in a completely straight line as soon as it hits the woods. Most of the city buildings stand in the plains, though there are many farmlands and side villages in the hills as well. While the city is large, most of the forest lands remain undisturbed.

Natural Resources

Fogmere has several farms, most of its agricultural products include wheat, apples, grapes, potatoes, beets, several species of cabbage, rice, cow milk, wool, and beef. Its wheat and rice industry mostly take place in altered pocket dimensions, which serve as extra farm ground, as to not clog up space in the city grounds, but it also has the perks of completely customizable weather conditions. In the yards of apartment buildings as well as on the edge of the city, several citizens have established personal gardens, where they grow their own fruit and vegetables. Most of these citizens live in small homes without any garden space on their property, therefore extra ground can be purchased. The hunting and gathering game in Fogmere is nothing to sneeze at. In the forest, several naturally growing mushrooms, berries, and herbs grow freely, most of which containing magical properties. Foraging is a popular witching activity for this reason. The forests are incredibly large and serve as magnificent hunting grounds. Several prey animals prance around here, there are little to no natural predators for them in the forest, therefore several hunters take station in the forests to prevent overpopulation.
I'm a Grade-A Dumbass and didn't know there was a settlement button. Anyhoo, here's Fogmere's flora and fauna!   The city of Fogmere is decently grown with various flora, mostly dominating is small flower patches, moss gardens on roofs, trees lining paths and roads and several bushes for decoration and assorted greenery along pathways as well. Fogmere has several parks, ranging from minor grass patches with playgrounds or flower gardens to the huge park around the town hall. The forest itself mostly exists out of broad-leaved trees, which seem to get bigger and bigger the deeper you stray in. The deeper you go into the forest, the less the laws of reality seem to apply, too, trees will grow in impossible ways, mist grows thick and sometimes seems to form solid structures, honestly, it looks like texture glitch galore in there. Due to magic's mutating properties, several strange species emerge, most of which are unrecorded to this day. There are the standard woodland animals one would find in northwest Europe, such as several species of birds, boar, deer, hare, rodents, etcetera. There are foxes and bears present as well but in smaller amounts. There are animals with magical properties to them as well. Several of these are considered unethical to kill due to their extremely high intelligence and rarity, amongst which are unicorns, pegasi, phoenixes, kelpies and descendants of the Ceryneian Hind. Species you can find which are also allowed to be hunted are jackalopes, perytons, Griffins and Baku.   This selection of creatures is not all Fogmere has to offer. Fogmere has its own reservation of creatures, where even rarer, sought after vegetation grows, as well as mythical animals under a breeding plan, which are also too dangerous to be allowed to roam free in the forest. This reservation is a conical shaped, multi-leveled overgrown cliff, where hunters and caretakers can descend to several levels to control and nurture the captive species. You can find plants such as semi-living trees with enchanted fruits, seeds, and leaves, mushrooms with spores of magical properties, mandrakes, and so on. The animal list of the reservoir is humongous. The magical creatures on the surface dwell here as well, but follow a special breeding program. As for the rest, here is a brief overview:
  • Predator animals, such as Onikuma, Stymphalian birds, Aosagibi, Pards, Manticores, Cerberi, Chimera, Yaoguai, Mapinguari.
  • Larger prey animals, such as Hakutaku, Nobusuma, Kting Voar, Cockatrices, Catobeplas.
  • Ambiguous creatures, such as Tristis, non-sapient slimes, non-sapient elementals
