Salt Flats

Many of those to make it as far as the Salt Flats have noted that they felt great disappointment at this location; that is until the visions started. The flats go for dozens of miles, miles of nothing, no raise in elevation, no trees, no clouds. Stories of seeing one’s greatest desire in the Flats have been spread around the Sinew, as well as shifting floors and tablets of stone surfacing and sinking into the ground.

Summary

The myth of the Flats is that a place North of the Llanos exists with no discerned beginning or end. Everyone who has ever 'been' to the Flats has experienced semi-religious and prophetical dreams before 'waking up', making many explorers attribute the Flats to a dream-space.

Historical Basis

The Flats are based on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, United States. They are a vast and seemingly endless flat landscape surrounded by mountains. It is visually stunning and the perfect place to make a person question their reality.

Spread

Almost everyone who has ventured out beyond the Sinew has experienced at least one 'Flat Dream', it is common knowledge amongst everyone in Aperture, though it is heavily disputed over as whether or not it is a real place, and whether the experiences are omens or visions.

Variations & Mutation

Individual accounts from the Flats vary, some report nothing beside vast emptiness, some say they witnessed massive beings crossing over infinite streams of water in laminar flow. One vision, from the Wizard Aksis, detailed a syzygy where he says he saw the end of the world.

Cultural Reception

Most adventurers share the stories amongst themselves, and the scientists of the Sinew are always seeking out the adventurers in the hopes of collecting more information. The secular cults of the city, however, have been consulting with the local nobles in attempts to ban outside travel and the discussion of Flat Dreams.

In Literature

Sinewian literature, ever since the first Flat Dream, was forever altered. Works of art and tales of the Flats are found all over the city, poems and poets have developed their entire brand around this place.
