Warney

Warney, the second largest city in the Westerfields and the seventh largest in the Empire. It is Anvel's primary producer of timber and timber related goods, and home to one of the largest collections of the Miri people. Constructed in the 2850's, the city has rapidly grown as the timber business booms, largely thanks to the pre-cut homes fad that the Anvel government has bought into. A largely self-sufficient city, it's main import that it requires is stone and precious minerals, otherwise Warney can more or less stand on its own.   Since its founding, Warney has been mostly made out of wood with some stone structural pieces. This has lead to several large-scale fires over the course of the city's life. After almost completely burning down in 2884 when a ferry caught fire and crashed into the magistrate building, this encouraged the government to radically expand the National Firefighter Corps not only in the city but across the continent.   Many government employees have expressed frustrations with the Cedars, a group of wealthy timber company overseers who have used their power and wealth to influence the local magistrate to favor their own needs rather than those of the government or the workers. Several actions have been brought forward but are almost always rejected or destroyed due to what many speculate were bribes from the Cedars.

Demographics

Warney is mostly made up of Anvelans, but there is a large presence of Miri, making up an estimated 14% of the inhabitants. From tree cutters to carpenters, about 40% of Warney holds a job related to the timber industry. Most of the wealthy citizens in Warney are members of Timber businesses.

Industry & Trade

30% of all of Anvel's timber products come just from Warney, which is how most of the population makes a living. Working for the timber industry is the most common job, either as a wood cutter, carpenter, paper maker, or any other number of related professions.

Infrastructure

Most of Warney represents the typical city, some tall buildings, plenty of apartment buildings and row houses, working sewers and two highway connections. Something that sets Warney apart from typical cities are the masses of factories to the south side of town in what is called the Paper District, due to the several Paper and Pulp factories that are present.

Guilds and Factions

The Cedars is a name given to the group of wealthy timber company overseers.  The Cedars have since become some of the richest people in Anvel due to their stranglehold on a third of the continent's timber.

History

Around 2850 P.I., as cutting through Old Oaks became more profitable, the Anvel government created more timber companies to meet the demand, but the five companies they created were having trouble housing their workers in an efficient manner. So the companies came together and built up several apartment buildings along the Taigo river. This was the foundation for Warney as a city. Eventually, as the companies produced more timber and attracted more jobs, other businesses cropped up to cater to the lumberjacks and carpenters, eventually ballooning the settlement to the size that it is now.

Architecture

Most of the buildings are made out of Old Oak and stone bricks in a tudor building style. The few buildings over seven stories are made entirely of stone bricks and mortar.

Geography

Located in the Westerfields, Warney is on mostly flat land and is surrounded by several small farms across the Taigo river and the large Old Oak Warney forest to the south. While standing on top of one of the taller buildings along the riverfront, you are able to see for several miles in all directions.

Natural Resources

Old Oak wood, wheat and corn are Warney's main exports, miscellaneous crops make up most of the rest of the natural resources.
