Steam boiler

Steam boilers are the heart of the industry, they are placed in every building and in every vehicle, it doesn’t matter if they are moving over land or rails, or trough Sky or water. Steam boilers power Eglen to the future.

Almost all boilers burn solid fuels such as wood and Coal only some burn oil. With the heat from the fires they boil water in to steam. Their sturdy structure allows the steam to boil into tremendous pressures of up to 60 at, reaching steam temperatures of 275°C.

In Eglen all boilers are made by the Boilermakers guild, who work hard to always improve on their design and efficiency. A boiler made by the guild stands for a reliable and high quality piece of equipment. If one ever finds a boiler not to be made with the approvement of the guild, one can be sure that is because the boilermaker failed his guild trials, and cannot reach the expected quality.

Solid fuel boilers are controlled by stokers, who shovel the coal into the furnaces at a rate required to keep the desired steam pressure. Not only will they shovel coal into the boilers, they also manage the water level, and remove the ashes if so required. The art of lighting a furnace and keep it burning at a consistent temperature without any cold spots along the coal fire bed is one that is only learned at the job as an assistant-stoker being taught by a master-stoker.

Big boilers such as in factories, trains, ships, air ships, will have stokers to run them and engineers to manage the stokers. But smaller boilers such as one find in its home or their steam carriage. Those will be managed by the driver, performing the delicate task of feeding the boiler, managing the steam valve and steering the carriage at the same time.

Oil fired boilers are new, and due to the low availability of oil very rare. One only finds them where they are a necessity, as they are smaller and lighter then coal fired boilers, also they do not require manual feeding of fuel. The Boilermaker guild has a special branch researching this new type of boiler. So far they are only in use in some of the smaller air ships and in the new winged air crafts.

A new development is the invention of a special canister that is said to hold steam at temperature and pressure at a much longer time then a tank would. Without requiring a furnace such as a boiler. But Mr. James Dewort is not a member of any guild, and he refuses to tell the guilds how his invention works. There for his invention is probably a hoax. He even says so on his street showings there is nothing inside his canisters. The Boilermakers guild has under disguise acquired one of Mr. Deworts canisters and found them to be two canisters, one inside the other. A recreation of the thing, and tests thereafter have shown that such a double canister has no advantages.
