The White Castle

The least cheap establishment in all of Glenwich!
The White Castle is a large coaching inn in the town of Glenwich, sitting directly in the shadow of Castle Glenwich and named for the Castle's gleaming white plastered walls. The inn is popular with pilgrims and other travelers visiting Castle Glenwich who can't be accommodated in the Castle itself.

Purpose / Function

The White Castle is primarily a coaching inn, a stopping place both for pilgrims and travelers on their way to and from Castle Glenwich, and for visitors to the town of Glenwich. It is also a popular pub for the wealthier locals of Glenwich.

Architecture

Following the dominant architectural fashions of the wider region, the inn is a cluster of white plastered, half-timbered buildings. The timber framework comes from hornbeam trees and rests upon a stone foundation. The two story segments of the inn use stone for the ground floor's wall infill, in this case slate which makes up much of County Glenwich's strata, while the upper floors and attics are infilled with wattle and daub. Single story segments are constructed similarly, with stone infill up to roughly 1 metre high, with wattle and daub making up the rest of the infill. The walls are coated with lime plaster and painted white.   The inn has few windows, and those that exist tend to be small, with the exception of the main common room. The main common room and higher class private rooms of the inn have leaded and crown glass windows, while the poorer rooms have shuttered windows. The exterior doors of each building have crown glass fanlights.   The roofs are gabled with steep sides and wide eaves, using slate tiles as a roofing material.

History

There has been an inn on the site of the White Castle since time immemorial. The earliest documented mention of such a structure is in a taxation record dated to 328 Era of Man, giving the inn's original name as the "Crown's Arms". The name was later changed, first to the "Broken Crown" when the Kingdom of Aaltiera broke up in the succession war of 89 Era of Spirits, the "War of the Five Princes", then to the current name of the "White Castle" in 121 Era of Spirits after the succession war petered out without a clear victor and Glenwich County formally seceded under the rule of the Order of the Raven.
