Portal Wars
As told by Nessean, who lives under Rimeridge Castle
“The portal wars started hundreds of years ago. Binya was around, Nemean and me hadn’t showed up yet. Not that Binya was anywhere near where this had happened. She was already taking care of the orphans and stayed as far from the “action” as she could. She lived south of here then, across the Hollow Waters.”
“I don’t think they’re interested in hearing my living arrangements from hundreds of years ago.”
“Oh, right, I get distracted sometimes. I’m jealous of all the things she got to see before I got here, the Portal Wars sound so exciting.”
“And deadly. So many died. So many were turned into things that shouldn’t be. I’m glad you weren’t here Gallosa. You’re rash enough you would have charged right into a dragon’s mouth.”
“But anyway, it mostly started with Anthriarch Dibirro of Arizi of House of Arizi. She was the head of that House with poor depth perception, the master landscapers. She was worried about the martial turn that Malema society was taking. The Tolorians used the Frosty Place as a testing ground for new generals and elite fighters and the Malema were starting to do the same. Most of the Malema came out at the portal near the Town and so she planned to destroy it.
“Espionage is common in Malema society and while it is generally handled quietly, turning the spies over to the sending House in exchange for their own spies, Dibirro took all the spies captured one year and made a big show of her and her personal guards executing the spies in Arizi’s main square. She was Taken shortly after with most of her personal guard joining her in the Frosty Place. She secretly gathered a coalition of others that disliked the way Maleman society was heading and a few of other races that joined for their own reasons: Tolorians wanting to eliminate Maleman competition for the kills, Gusine and Kuath who were sick of the strife and conflict, and others who joined individually for their own purposes.
“The portal could not be taken on at once. There were skirmishes everywhere, from what are now the Maleman ruins to the mountains north of the Town. Dragons attacked Giant camps and fortifications and Giants returned the favor. That’s how the Maleman Houses became ruins by the way. A group of Giants leveled the whole place. The Malema weren’t expecting it so they were caught with their pants down. I love that expression.
“Finally after so many things were destroyed Dibirro and her allies launched an attack on the portal. It portal was difficult to shut down. Dragons came to defend it. Giants came to help destroy the dragons. Cold Walkers swarmed the area. The Frosty Place itself seemed to fight the destruction of the gate. Dibirro led her people, inspiring them to move forward and take the gate. She herself died in the battle and her loss made her people fight harder. Things were not going well though. It’s hard when anyone faces dragons, and there were more dragons in one place than I think had been seen before or after. When all seemed lost a group of Shadow Cats arrived and were able to hold everything off long enough for the Gusine wizard Geom to shatter the portal, though he took what appeared to be mortal wounds in the process. The Shadow Cats carried Geom on their backs to The Town, leaving him with a group of woodsmen who brought him into town. In time Geom recovered physically though mentally he was never the same. His sanity broke entirely.”
