Caliphal Guard
The Caliphal Guard (Arabic الحارس الخليفة al-Haris al-Khalifa), often known by its Moorish name el Haris, is the Umayyad Caliphate in New Andalusia's first and most senior military service by order of precedent. The Caliphal Guard traces its descent from the forces that took baya from Musa II during the Moorish Fitna, shortly after Yusuf I was born.
To secure the Caliphal Guard's loyalty, Musa entrusted his son Yusuf to them as a diplomatic hostage in 1801. In their custody, Yusuf proved himself, and when Musa II died in 1808 the Caliphal Guard took his son's baya.
Mission
The Caliphal Guard differs from FANA in one crucial respect: because it predates the 1825 Constitution, the Caliphal Guard takes its loyalty from the House of Umayya.- El Haris serves the House of Umayya, providing security for family members and properties. At the House's discretion, this service can be extended further; in especially heated elections, for instance, politicians have occasionally been offered a Guard escort for the duration of the political season.
- During Yusuf I's early years, the Caliphal Guard was often deployed to deal with bandits, cattle thieves, and raiders.
- Embassy security
- The Caliphal Guard has served as the War Palace's detective force since Abd.Rahman VI, when the Umayyad Fleet (at the time considered untrustworthy) was placed under its oversight. While each service is responsible for breaking up its own bar fights and so forth, crimes conducted on military bases are under the Guard's jurisdiction.
- Military deployment in defense of the Caliphate
Equipment
- The Caliphal Guard uses the Mo.44 Alzamendi rifle as its standard service arm.
- The standard officer's sidearm remains the 11/14, but the Caliphal Guard has been earmarked to get the first batch of Mo.48 pistols.
Structure
The Caliphal Guard generally follows the FANA rank structure.
