Voniara Conservatory and Nursery

Nothing here has teeth, but expect to be bitten anyway.

There had been a time when the greenhouse had been simple, clean, and organized. Back before the land had turned grey and dark, before the last vestiges of color had begun to wash away from the trees and grass itself, back when their island had been whole. Now though, it was one of the few remaining places where life could bloom. So of course, the school took full advantage of that.   Every inch of the large glass structure was covered in foliage of all colors. Deep purples, warm reds, and luscious blues swimming among vast seas of green. It was divided into four different subsections, whose temperatures were controlled by a complex mix of old and new magic, or water running cold and hot down man made streams and waterfalls. For the uninitiated it could take nearly two hours to walk the length of this greenhouse, and nearly an hour to walk its width. The poor students assigned to work here often cursed and grumbled at their luck... at least at first.   Hovering pots held all manner of strange foliage just out of reach overhead, usually these were the most poisonous flora, or the most valuable. Occasionally however there was one or two plants that simply seemed to grow better when suspended from on high. The tropical wing of the greenhouse held the most of these such plants, who often tempted unsuspecting passerby to lean in close and see just what was to be so feared. Of course within the taiga section there were a few more tame varieties, shivering in their colder temperature and growing at a much slower rate, but no less beautiful when at last in bloom.   Two more sections remained, the desert, and the temperate. Each one with unique properties of its own, but these were much kinder to visitors. While taking too much from certain cacti and desert blooms could certainly prove disastrous to a fool, to those wise enough it was easy to discern the correct amount allowed before they risked too much. Over in the temperate section there was a small chance of plucking something that could give you a nasty bite, but more often than not you would find base ingredients for all your common needs, growing calmly, though these were the most in demand. After all, it wasn't as though you could walk into a magic greenhouse and expect anything to be easy.   In each section there were blinking eyes that always seemed to stare out at you, twisting vines and roots that seemed to inch ever nearer when you weren't looking, and of course a subtle hum in the air that brought you closer with each breath. It was a deathtrap to any who weren't aware of magic and its powers. But it was a haven for all those reckless young students that inhabited the school and wished to make a name for themselves in potion making and alchemy. When classes were held here they were often held in the Temperate area just to avoid tempting the students too much.   Though someone always got into something.    Sometimes it was being lured by the gentle song of Icicle Ivy, beckoning you closer into its frigid grasp so it may plant its roots and feed for a season. Or it could be the sweet scent of the Sugar Sand Flower tempting you to have just a bit more, until you find yourself curled on the floor mottled black and blue with purple eyes and a green tongue. There were countless little things that drew ones eye and ear, that made the greenhouse the absolute worst, and best, place to get lost. Sometimes seniors simply wanted to see what their juniors would get into, or the more dedicated would spend hours categorizing and analyzing each and every specimen.   Over and over again more students would be found sticking their noses where they didn't belong. But that was the beauty of learning in this place, each and every experience one could walk away from was a new bit of knowledge gained. Another page filled out in a journal, a new book to read under the covers, one more spell to try, or a new potion to brew. Even the most ridiculous of mistakes often led to much needed revelations, and since no one had died in here in the last five hundred years, well the school wasn't exactly in a hurry to change this policy. After all, there were bigger fish to fry, and the students who entered the greenhouse with burning curiosity, always left it with an even brighter flame in their eyes.

Geography

The greenhouse is enclosed in a massive almost two story tall dome of glass, just barely opaque and inscribed with a number of old runes. Incredibly small iron bars run between the largest sections of window, twisting and turning in the shape of even larger runes that help to hold the structure together and keep its temperature consistent. It is a part of the main structure at Voniara located along the northwest side of the building and jutting out from the main classroom and office area. Surrounding it on all but one side are the remains of the school lake, now converted into an outdoor area to grow more seasonal plants and herbs. The magic that protects the greenhouse seems to have extended out to this little area as well, giving it some protection against the Curse that has blighted the land, though plants here will still fail from time to time.
