Iancoril Vanmaer

(a.k.a. The Shark's Eye)

Iancoril Vanmaer is perhaps the most infamous pirate in Amion, having plagued the seas and coastlines for centuries. Born in Haven in 260, he soon took to piracy, and it wasn't long before he rose to his own captaincy. Over the centuries, he had a custom ship constructed to his own designs, often called the fastest ship in Amion, known as The Deceit. Combined with his talent for slipping away from any trouble, this ship allowed Vanmaer to build a fearsome reputation, coming to be known as the Shark's Eye, named for the featureless white eye he bears beneath a scar, given to him by a rival captain.
In 371, during a moot to decide Haven's next sheriff, the traditional ruler of the city, Iancoril burst into the proceedings, killing the hopeful candidates in a coup to seize power for himself. Installing himself as king among pirates, he has ruled since, from his throne upon The Deceit, for which he has had a specialist dock constructed, for it to act as a palace when in Haven. He spends much of his time in the town, dealing with the minutiae of ruling, spending less time plaguing the mainland. However, when he does venture forth, he lives up to his continued reputation of being the greatest pirate Amion has seen.
Vanmaer is constantly accompanied by a jet black, plumed bird with scarlet feather details. Many rumours swirl regarding this long-lived bird, it having first been seen with Iancoril in the early 300s. Clearly mystical in some way to survive for so long, some claim it grants the Shark's Eye unnaturally powerful magic abilities, despite having shown no arcane aptitude in his early life.
