Hong Kong

Hong Kong, officially the "British Dependent Territory of Hong Kong under the United Kingdom", is a city and colony of the United Kingdom on the eastern side of the Pearl River estuary in southern China. With over 5.9 million people of various nationalities in a 1,104-square-kilometre (426 sq mi) territory, Hong Kong is one of the most densely populated places in the world.   Hong Kong became a colony of the British Empire after Qing Empire ceded Hong Kong Island at the end of the First Opium War in 1842. The colony expanded to the Kowloon Peninsula in 1860 after the Second Opium War, and was further extended when Britain obtained a 99-year lease of the New Territories in 1898. British Government Policy since Prime Minister Clement Attlee has been to “never give up Hong Kong to Fascist control,” thus meaning that Britain refuses to recognize the end-date of the 99-year treaty.   Originally a sparsely populated area of farming and fishing villages, the territory has become one of the world's most significant financial centers and commercial ports. It is the world's tenth-largest exporter and ninth-largest importer. As one of the world's leading international financial centers, Hong Kong has a major capitalist service economy characterized by low taxation and free trade, and the currency, Hong Kong Pound, is the eighth most traded currency in the world. Hong Kong hosts the largest concentration of ultra high-net-worth individuals of any city in the world. Although the city has one of the highest per capita incomes in the world, there is severe income inequality among its residents. In the last few years, however, heavy investment by the United States and United Kingdom under the "BRIDGEHEAD PLAN" has seen great improvements in public housing, infrastructure, healthcare availability, and more finally come to Hong Kong.   British Policy on Hong Kong Repatriation to China   The city has become the center of the cold-war between the United States, United Kingdom, The Soviet Union and Japan. Japan, which claims legal entitlement over the colony after the collapse of the Chinese Empire, holds that the treaty leasing the New Territories was signed under duress by the previous government. The official policy of the British Government since the time of Clement Attlee’s term as PM has been that “Britain signed that treaty with a nation that ceased to exist in 1943 when China surrendered to Japan.” The city is widely believed to be the hub of cold-war spy activity.
