Onionwood

Onionwood was once the home of the mighty Onion Oaks, and the birthplace of the Onionwood Dwarves. The tribe of dwarves that founded the city were prosperous miners and craftsmen, traveling in search of new land to mine when they happened upon the grove of Onion Oaks that would become Onionwood. As they prepared to create mining tunnels under the unfamiliar trees, they discovered that the roots of the Onion Oaks were full of large, delicious onions that could be harvested without harming the trees.   The dwarves soon gave up mining in favor of farming new groves of their treasured discovery. The city of Onionwood blossomed beneath the bows of the Onion Oaks, and for many years it thrived. The dwarves mastered the art of cultivating the Onion Oaks, and even experimented with developing new varieties and hybrids.   Then, just as it seemed that Onionwood might grow into its very own metropolis, three misfortunes occurred in one summer.   A drought dried up the soil that the trees grew in, then a fire ravaged the largest part of the grove, and finally, the trees suddenly stopped bearing fruit. The people called that summer the Parched Summer.   The next year, the trees began to die.   In just three years, the once lush, jewel green forest of wondrous trees turned into dusty gray skeletons in a piss-yellow desert. Not much of anything grew at all.   The citizens of Onionwood largely left their homes to move on, seeking better fortunes. A few stayed, either in a vague hope that the Oaks would grow again somehow, or in a bitter attempt to prove that their claim to the location was stronger than the Onion trees'.   In more recent years, Onionwood has seen a bit of revitalization. Due to the lack of authorities after the Parched Summer, Onionwood became a gathering place for thieves and riff raff. Then, seeing the possibility, a dwarven man named Hyram Tyre, opened a casino in Onionwood; the Oaken Onion. It was an unprecedented success. He opened more "Pleasant places"-- a brothel, a theater, several more casinos, bath houses, taverns, restaurants, a circus. The destitution of Onionwood became Hyram's fortune.   In his old age, Hyram intended to leave the care and upkeep of Onionwood to his daughter, Gin. But, as he saw his final day, Gin vanished, leaving Hyram's bastard nephew, Baff, in charge of the city instead. Baff had none of the cleverness or goodwill of the other members of the Tyre family, and has ushered in an age of corruption and callousness in his time as the de-facto mayor of Onionwood.

Fauna & Flora

Not much anymore. Before the Parched Summer, Onionwood was home to many rarely occurring plants, most famously the Onion Oaks.   There was also Giant Cilantro, Candy Carrot, Blood Berries, and Sandlewood Smoke.
