Surtur's Fall Myth in Amanor | World Anvil

Surtur's Fall

Surtur's Fall is a mythical tale of the death of Surtur, the progenitor god of fire giants. He was slain during Ragnarok by the goddess Galatea and his colossal remains can be found in the mountains of Achillonia in the valley known as Surtur's Grave. Surtur's Fall is highly important in the mythological traditions of the Amazons.

Summary

In the mythological conflict known as Ragnarok all the evil forces of the Universe were arrayed against the Empyreal Gods who had previously retreated from Amanor to watch over their mortal children from the firmament. Not only was Ulthgard, the home of the Empyreals, besieged by the armies of dark gods but so too was the sanctity of Amanor itself breached. Uncounted hordes of demons, angels, goblinoids, giants and other terrors poured forth from planar portals to sow destruction upon the fledgling civilizations of that ancient time. Leading the planar warhosts that invaded Amanor were many dark champions and figures of grim legend but also evil gods themselves.   It was the fire giants of Muspelheim that arrived to Amanor by the jungle regions that are nowadays known as The South. After burning and pillaging those ancient forests the mighty Surtur strode northwards with his children in tow. The muspeljars' reign of destruction would be short-lived, however, for when crossing the mountains of the White Peaks they were intercepted by the Empyreals. A legion of valkyries ambushed Surtur's army while the God of Destruction himself was challenged to a duel by the Goddess of Battle.   On those snow-capped peaks the mighty Surtur fought the daughter of Maelach. For many days and nights the battle raged, the mountainside crumbling in their wake and the skies darkening with ash from falling meteors. Claps like thunder echoed from the shuddering peaks as godly spells were unleashed, and the clashing of blades and the falling of colossal feet made the very earth shake. In the end it was Galatea that emerged victorious, smiting Surtur's ruined form upon the mountainside. The muspeljar were routed and this terrible display of Empyreal might served as a warning to others -- a similar fate would await all those that had deigned to wage war on the mortals of Amanor.

Basis

To this day, the earth-like skeleton of the god of fire giants can be found in the White Peaks of Achillonia. Known as Surtur's Grave, the place is a pilgrimage destination for the amazons. Moreover, Ragnarok itself is religious canon for the Empyreal Faith and is treated as historical fact.

Variations

Alternate tellings of the the myth connect the duel between Surtur and Galatea to the very birth of the amazon race. It is said that Galatea suffered only a single wound in that savage battle and in that moment the mountain peaks were spattered with the goddess' blood. From those droplets of blood the first amazons arose to behold the divine superiority of their creator. After the battle it is said that Galatea spent time teaching her ways to those first amazons and from their bloodlines the amazon race was born.
