Cienne Settlement in Alvarica | World Anvil

Cienne

Cienne is the capital of Ma'trine, a glittery metropolis that has risen with the modern age to be one of the world's largest cities. It is a hub of multiculturalism, split between the dizzying heights of the very wealthy and the vast slums of the poor who dwell on the cities outskirts.   Cienne was founded around several hundred years ago as a trade city on the routes to Hiru and Azareshir, where traders would stop to rest before they departed Ma'trine. When Ma'trinian borders expanded in 4690 with the collapse of Emendal, the small city of Cienne became an important military outpost - the last true Ma'trinian city before the wildlands. The city swelled in subsequent years, but it was the invention of Clockworks in 4752 by a Cienne born entrepreneur that changed the cities course forever.   Reyela Works built the first factories in Cienne that later led to the city becoming a center of industry for the entire nation. The population swelled as the rich and poor alike came hoping to benefit from the crumbs of Reyela's success, and the city tripled in size over just twenty years.   In 4775 the city was made capital of the nation, replacing historic Avenor and its explosive growth has not slowed since.

Government

The City Presidium of Cienne serves as local government, under the auspices of the Grand Curia. The six members of the Presidium are appointed every six years from the nobility of the city, and the Mayorship of the city rotates between a different member each year in order of age from eldest to youngest. The Presidium manages city services, such as water and infrastructure maintenance, and building approvals. The Mayor acts as the city representative to the Egolante and has a tie breaking vote.

Architecture

Cienne is a classic example of Ma'trinian architecture. Geometric lines, folklore and astronomical imagery in abstract or highly stylised forms, angular lines contrasted with arches or circles creating depth of design.

I love the vibe of this place. It still leaves room for a sense of foreboding, but doesn't seem completely grim. Inviting, but dangerous.
