The Unification Wars
The wars in which the Three Kingdoms were formed. The continent of Old Altinius had been divided into five peoples: The Eastern Kings , The Western Barbarians , The Northern Raiders , The Southern Merchants , and the The Central Farmers . One of the Eastern Kings, The King of Skulls , was exiled, and rallied The Western Barbarians to crush The Eastern Kings. His three brothers, The Kings of Storms , Swords , and States , each went to a different part of the continent to muster a defense. The King of States made deals with The Southern Merchants, providing supplies to the Kings' armies. The King of Swords forged weaponry and armed The Central Farmers, preparing them for war with the Barbarians. The King of Storms subjugated The Northern Raiders, channeling the power of storms to awe them into submission.
Together, the Three Kings beat back The King of Skulls and his Barbarian army, conquering the entire continent in the process. For a short while, they ruled in harmony, but soon infighting tore them apart. The King of States shut himself in with his Merchant elite, keeping his armies sequestered in his fortified trade towns. The King of Swords took his armies and invaded the North, but was killed by The King of Storms in single combat. Eventually, the warring factions coalesced into the Three Kingdoms of Old Altinius: Storms' territory became Pentonia , Swords' territory became Costraña , and States' territory became Autierre . To this day, the echoes of these wars affect the Three Kingdoms: Pentonia reveres Stormvessels, and Costraña hates them, while the Autierran monarchy is still indebted to the Merchant class.
