The Ancients' War

Long ago, the known world was united by the hand of the great Altinian Empire. First, they conquered their close neighbors, introducing them to the luxuries of civilization. Next, they united The Nations of the Xi Ascendancy, bringing an end to the generations of war and savagery that had plagued them. Finally, they used their vast knowledge of magic and architecture to create a barrier between themselves and the wild continent of Archaia, ensuring that Altinian citizens would never again fall victim to the natives’ vile curses and unrelenting barbarism.
Harnessing the power of storms, the nobles of Altinius pushed technological and artistic development to new heights, rocketing the continent into a golden age that lasted for centuries. Unfortunately, not all appreciated Altinius’ benevolent rule. A group of savage outcasts from the far reaches of the world united against Altinius, longing to plunge civilization back into its earliest dark days at the behest of their dark gods. These Ancients forged an alliance with other nations, nations that had thus far taken advantage of Altinius’ benevolence and instated local tyrannical rulers of their own choosing, and took up dark magic to further their cause against the Empire.
Altinius valiantly defended its citizens, sending its legions of soldiers and squadrons of arcane Stormvessels to beat back the enemy. Soon, The Ancients knew of the inevitability of their defeat and, in one last act of defiance, overloaded every Vessel in the world with arcane energy, causing them to overflow and kill millions.
The havoc wreaked on the world by The Ancients’ actions was unprecedented. The land connecting Archaia to Altinius collapsed, leaving in its wake an arcane maelstrom that churns and spikes to this day. The Altinian mainland was made completely barren, sparing nothing but remnants of the Altinian’s greatest architectural wonders.
