This is a world brought together and torn apart by magic, the elemental and basic force that simultaneously nurtures its people and land while also threatening to ruin everyone and everything. Stories handed down the generations tell of mighty archmages brought low - their minds burned through by magic - who wrought indiscriminate destruction, even on those they loved and cherished. No one and nowhere was safe; the whole world was broken and ravaged by their unchecked powers. Because of this, it was known that magic and its users must be corralled, constrained, trained, and above all else, kept sane.
The Citadel is the place where that became possible. With the wisdom of millennia of teachings, careful experimentation, and exacting practice, the Warden-Keeper has protected the world by taking in their magically talented youths. At the Citadel, they learn to shield their minds from the ravages of unchecked magical energy even in the outside world. After their education, they are able to lead productive lives within and without the walls of The Citadel. The only payment required is seven year's service following their graduation.

It has been nearly five centuries since the last member of The Citadel fell to madness. The few outbreaks that do occur are due to people not reporting their child's abilities in time for them to be properly trained, fearing that their child will be snatched by nameless, evil mages in the night. The Warden-Keeper and the governments which support The Citadel claim the centuries of peace as proof that their efforts have had real effect. The reputation of Citadel-trained agents has only grown over the past five-hundred years. Many laud the Warden-Keeper and the efforts of The Citadel in preventing another world-wide disaster, though others decry the influence that The Citadel wields on the world stage.

This campaign will follow the characters through their education at The Citadel and into their lives beyond its walls. There are mysteries to solve, dangers to face, and secrets to uncover. This world is unique in its ancient newness, its independent integration, its familiar exoticism.
