Spirit Perception

Spirit Perception allows one to use energy/emotion/spirit to discern something not normally perceptable to the five senses. This can be seeing from a distance or seeing emotions, hearing thoughts or hearing songs not yet written, etc.

Effect

This ability usually manifests as one of the five senses. While the percpetion of thoughts, for example, isn't done with the ears, the caster cannot understand how it is perceived except through the senses they already know. Therefore, the caster's mind interprets the input as "hearing" or "seeing" or "tasting."
Often, there is something about the perception of the extra-sensory input that indicates it is not the same as normal "hearing," "seeing," or "tasting." This could be a kind of transparency in "visual" input, an unearthly tonal quality to the "audio" input, etc.
Occassionally, there is no indication that the input is not sensory but extra-sensory. For example, "hearing" a song not yet written might just come down to remembering a song that the perciever never actually heard before. These kinds of inputs can cause a great deal of confusion, even in experienced practitioners.

Side/Secondary Effects

While not actually hallucinations, an inability to differentiate between sensory and spirit perception can make the practitioner have the same symptoms and effects as a person who is hallucinating. If this isn't remedied, the practitioner can find their lives greatly effected by the inclusion of perceptions that no one else can seem to perceive. In severe cases, a practitioner may be diagnosed with schizophrenia - and the diagnosis would not necessarily be inaccurate.

Gestures & Ritual

Some practitioners have a physical trigger for using certain types of spirit perception. Most common is a temporary crossing or unfocusing of the eyes to trigger "seeing" emotional energies.

Applied Restriction

Perceptions are all equally real to the mind. If the practitioner cannot figure out ways to discern the more potentially invasive types of spirit perception from sensory perception, they may suffer the same effects as those with sensory and/or hallucinatory mental health diagnoses.
